New pup - Question about fur type (with pics)

Just curious about opinions (and want to show off new pup!)

We have a new puppy and are enjoying him very much. He's very lovely and affectionate (also very nippy). He seems to be settling in well.

Just wondered, he has short fluffy fur all over and I was wondering what people thought his fur might be like when he's older? Will it grow longer or turn more wiry?

Also, curious to know what he will look like as an adult dog. Any guesses what his dominant breed is? (We know, just curious what others think) Wink

Nawwww!!! What's his name?

I'm guessing there's Collie in there? My Collie's fur was like that as a pup, now it's long and sleek, and silky smooth :)

theconstantinoplegardener · 01/02/2021 17:12

Aw, he's gorgeous! Beautiful blue eyes! My guess is greyhound and border collie (merle).

LightDrizzle · 01/02/2021 17:16

Springer and collie?
If so, he’ll be nuts! Grin

NorbertMeubles · 01/02/2021 17:19

He is so beautiful

Sprig1 · 01/02/2021 17:20

If you hadn't said he was a mix I would have said he was a border collie, so BC x whippet? I think he will be quite long haired as an adult. Both of my BCs had shorter hair as pups and are smooth coated.

WhoseThatGirl · 01/02/2021 17:22

I don’t know but he’s gorgeous!!

QuentinWinters · 01/02/2021 17:27

V cute! Collie x something, I don't know what tho
I reckon his coat will be border collie so double coat and fluffy....he looks fluffier than my collie x at that age and mine has got quite hairy now

NewPupNewLove · 01/02/2021 17:41

Ahh thanks guys Smile

His name is Blue. He's a lurcher.

His mum was half - collie x whippet, collie and greyhound (she looked more collie with longish hair)

And his dad is a bit of collie, whippet and greyhound (looked more Whippet, short hair)

He's very lovely and playful, and very fluffy. Not as fluffy as some collies I've seen though so wasn't sure if he'd end up more of a wiry haired lurcher type when he's bigger.

I reckon he's going to be fluffy: none of those breeds will have the genetics for a wiry coat.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 01/02/2021 17:45

Awwww how cute. 😍

Sprig1 · 01/02/2021 17:54

That's a good mix. Are you going to do any agility/fly ball with him? He should be fast.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 01/02/2021 17:55

He looks and sounds absolutely lovely!

I've learned the hard way not to predict fur types... I particularly wanted a smooth, short haired dog (can't even remember why) and the sleek, smooth, shiny puppy I bought grew into the scruffy, wiry rascal I have on my knee as I type. Also her markings moved! She had black 'eyebrows' as a puppy and they have migrated backwards to be under her ears now.

So I would just watch and be amazed. You will adore him whatever.

LittleBoPeep95 · 01/02/2021 18:02

Please come back and update us with more pics in a few months time!

blowinahoolie · 01/02/2021 19:14

Absolutely stunning puppy ❤️ enjoy your time with him. I love his markings and had a feeling there was greyhound there in him. Pointy faceGrin

moosemama · 01/02/2021 19:48

Oh my goodness, he’s gorgeous! Grin

I don’t think you can predict it. Almost 15 years ago we brought home our rescue Lurcher. Very slightly broken coated, but in no way fluffy.

Here’s a phot of him at 14 weeks, one at about 12-14 months ish and one of what he looks like now.

moosemama · 01/02/2021 19:49

Here’s another of him around 14 weeks old.

Seaoftroubles · 01/02/2021 20:00

He is absolutely gorgeous, he looks almost full border collie, he's got the collie eye! but maybe a bit of springer or English setter as well?

Seaoftroubles · 01/02/2021 20:02

Oops sorry didn't refresh... he is lovely! I'm very jealous.

Tumbleweed101 · 01/02/2021 21:42

My lurcher has a single coat - means she gets chilly this time of year! - she can look slightly fluffy in winter but is sleek in summer. She is a collie x greyhound x saluki. Much less fur moulted than from my fluffy CKC spaniel!

NewPupNewLove · 02/02/2021 08:07

@moosemama he's lovely!

How can I tell if he has a double coat or single coat? Or does it show when they're older?

He seems to get cold if he's outside for too long and not running around and seems to shiver?

Is that a puppy thing or because he's got a single coat?

I’d say the fluffy puppy coat will start changing at 4-6 months ish and you’ll have a pretty good idea of coat type by 6-8 months, although it may not fully come in until physical maturity.

Lurchers do have a tendency to get cold in winter, as they have so little body fat. You can find some lovely coats for them though. My old boy has never needed a coat before now, due to his Bearded Collie undercoat, but I have recently invested in one to keep his arthritic joints warm.

My other boy needed a fleece coat at night during winter when he was a puppy (as an adult he preferred to be tucked in under a nice fluffy blanket) and a fleece lined raincoat for walks as a pup and adult. He also had a light cotton-lined coat for rainy but warm walks, as he really objected to going for walks in the rain unless he had a coat on. He had wispy (a bit like Bedlington) fur on his neck, shoulders, back and head and a beard. His fur was thickest over his back, chest, shoulders with some thinner, more wispy fur on the fronts of his legs, but he only had the thinnest, barely-there covering of fur on his stomach and the inside of his legs. Essentially he looked bald there and you could clearly see his skin and pigmentation, but if you looked closely there was a very light covering of fur. Very much like lighter coloured Greyhounds.

You can’t see it from the photo above, but my old boy has the weirdest coat. It’s a real mix of types, so I need different combs and brushes for each area. He has coarser, Deerhound-type coat on his neck ruff, chest, shoulders and beard (although this tends to shed and get less wispy in the summer) a beautifully silky soft topcoat across the rest of his body and dense, thick fluffy undercoat (we call it his bunny fur) under that, particularly over his back end and ‘bloomers’. He sheds copiously and constantly, no matter how often he’s groomed!

Darklane · 02/02/2021 10:56

He’s beautiful.
Definitely a lot of collie in there, I grew up with working Collies. He could look a lot like his mum when fully grown, definitely no wiry coat. He’s beautifully marked.

Santaiscovidfree · 02/02/2021 11:56

Our dpuppy is saluki /deerhound. The roughness of her dm was obvious from when we first met! Her underneath is silky and amazing though! Topcoat is long and wiry! She hates the wet but is a warm ddog. Unlike our smaller Lurchers who love a coat /jumper!!
