What is the difference between working dog food and pet dog food? Can I feed raw working dog food to my delightful lazy dachshund?

We've just moved over to raw and HE LOVES IT! Not surprising really...

We've started cautiously and in two or three weeks will introduce a wider range. Much of the best raw foods seems to be categorised as "working dog" food.... but doesn't seem that different in composition to pet dog food.

Although they say they have more fat and less carbs, this isn't always the case - depending on what animal they're using ....

I realise that they don't charge VAT on working dog food, so clearly it is in their interests to categorise more as working dog.

But does it matter if I give my dog working dog food?

And I read something that said giving him more protein and less carbs would create a dog "on steroids" with masses more energy and not knowing where to put it..... might this be why some of the raw pet dog foods have 20% fluit and veg alongside the meat and bone?

Vat

Wibblewombat I love your succinctness....

Does that mean I can just feed it to my wee fella without adverse effects - or supercharging his energy?

Yep, it's a VAT issue. If you're happy with the nutritional content then there's no reason not to feed it.

Dogs are omnivores and 20-30% fruit, veg, etc in a raw diet is quite correct. Those that are 100% meat will invariably tell you to mix with something else.

Yes, that’s it. No VAT on working dog food. Just check the contents especially protein levels.

So that means for the same quality it should cost about 20% less... that's pretty significant!
