Is there anything to stop my dog snoring????

10 year old dachshund. Sounds like a bloody old man. I’m so fed up with it. Wakes me regularly through the night. Sleeps in my room in a crate, can’t sleep anywhere else as she just barks all night. I sleep with a white noise app, a fan on and she still wakes me up. Can’t use ear plugs as dc sleep walks. Vet just says ‘dogs snore’. She is raw fed so unless she is allergic to meat I doubt it’s an allergy. I have no air fresheners etc in use, have tried giving her piriton and tried the snore stop tablets and nothing works.

Anything else I haven’t tried please as I’m desperate??? Sad

Ooh I missed this today Grin of course I would never want to put her through something that is unnecessary as she has been through so much already, BUT after a year with me her anxiety isn’t going to get any better than it is, all the behaviourists say to leave her be and that I won’t get any further with the progress we have got and let her live her Years out as happy as can be.... so I’m stuck between a rock and hard place. My home life is not ‘usual’. I am ok my own with disabled dcs, I can’t leave her to bark in their rooms (even though they want her in their room) I can’t do the creeping out my room slowly each night until she is out due to the layout of my room and the hallway and one dc sleep walks so not an option, as they would walk straight into the crate in a narrow hallway....

She needs some breath right strips!

Also @villainousbroodmare I'm very well thanks.

Certainly well enough not to be suggesting a laryngeal tie back in a toy breed dog snoring at rest...

If only they did breath right for dogs! How active is she OP?

If she's only been with you a year my first thought would be that her fitness and muscle tone is probably still quite poor.

Increasing her exercise and fitness can definitely tighten every thing up, so I'd suggest working on her fitness and muscle tone generally

I also know I keep banging on but honestly - please consider a clinical vet behavioural referral and proper anti anxiety meds - it will help her feel better and if you can sleep separately then you don't have this issue.

Finally if she does have other clinical signs such as exercise intolerance then a referral may well be worthwhile. For your peace of mind if nothing else

That's good, Veterinari. Just noticed you being more than usually unpleasant and accusatory on a number of threads recently.

How lovely of you Confused

@Veterinari what is excercise intolerance? She’s awful on walks. Spends most of the time stopping and looking behind her. Or barking at every one. She has been attacked a few times by the dogs she used to live with. Bizarre really as she has such a lovely temperament but as soon as you leave the house she is a bumbling mess. Some days it does feel pointless taking her out as it’s more like taking her for a drag rather than a walk yet she get so excited when I get her lead out and we are at the front door! I’m not sure the vet would see us now, I think just emergency stuff but I could try giving them a ring tomorrow. Will they give me meds to try though? They weren’t that pro meds for anxiety... they said they were happy for her to be on zyklene whilst she was under the behaviourist but we aren’t under them anymore as nothing else we can do any the zyklene didn’t make much difference....

Also I want to reiterate, it isn’t ‘just’ snoring. She also ‘snores’ when she is wide awake. Not all day every day, sometimes you can’t hear her but she does also do it during the day, which of course isn’t a problem in the day time (other than when I’m trying to work and she is in her bed Grin)

Hmmm... to be honest it's tricky to say without seeing her.

That could be her anxiety - poor pup Sad it sounds tricky for you both.

Exercise intolerance would usually be an enthusiasm for exercise but a physical inability to fully engage. Eg easily getting out of breath, heavy or noisy breathing, struggling to get air in, collapse.

It does sound more like her anxiety and possible reluctance to exercise may be contributing as that may mean her soft tissues are weaker/more flaccid and therefore softer and more likely to cause snoring when she's at rest.

Could you look into hydrotherapy or similar to build muscle tone in a controlled way?

A vet behaviourist would prescribe meds directly if your own vet is reluctant, though they are expensive if not insured.

The main licensed anxiety med in dogs is clomipramine although amytriptilline and fluoxetine are also commonly used off-license.

Just saw this - further investigations may be indicated - it's probably worth raising with your vet again - maybe endoscopic evaluation to check no masses, rhinitis or other abnormalities?

Again it's difficult today without seeing her - lots of dacsies do snore so it's tricky to say

Dogwoes1 · 02/02/2021 21:26

No I don’t see her out of breath in the way you have described, no.I’m careful with her as she has grade 1/2 Ivdd. She doesn’t change balls, rarely plays with toys (sometimes will play tug but she didn’t seem to know how to do that when I got her) she has her scatty minutes where she will zoom around the downstairs a couple of times a day. She was chubby when she came to me but she has a good waist now and is nice and slim so I don’t think weight is an issue (neither does vet) but I hear what you are saying about muscle tone. I don’t think she was walked that much really (the house she came from had a LOT of dogs) so I don’t think she would have been walked daily. I don’t want to sit here and slag the poor dog off as she has been through so much and she really is a different dog to what I brought home... she is very happy at home, loves us and doesn’t want for anything. She is never left alone and I don’t think she will ever cope with being left alone either, although with continuous lockdowns not a major issue just now.

@Veterinari would endoscopic stuff be done under general I’m guessing? Will cost a fortune... she is insured BUT I was lied to about previous health issues which means the insurance isn’t valid for anything pre existing etc but I don’t think there was anything in her notes about her breathing. Then again the previous owner wouldn’t have noticed anyway Angry

It would yes.

Poor pup. It sounds like she had a rough ride before she found you Sad

TheSpottedZebra · 02/02/2021 21:35

I have nothing to add other than it doesn't come across like your slagging off your dog!
You're just trying to describe to the situation to people to cant see/hear/know her.

It's obvious you're a caring owner, bit also that the situation is quite tough.

Dogwoes1 · 02/02/2021 21:35

She has. I was lied to, ALOT. She has had all sorts happen to her and I did not know anything of it as to be honest by life is hard enough and I would not have taken her if I had known. Blessing in disguise for her though of course, she is treated like a little queen here!

Dogwoes1 · 02/02/2021 21:36

Thanks @TheSpottedZebra I do love her but it has become quite stressful dealing with her and the broken sleep on top of life being already hard.
