This has been here for a few days. Where we live is very muddy, he is getting muddy twice a day and I hose his undercarriage before I bring him in. Could this aggregate it?

Looks sore. Is he nibbling at it? What are the specks? No chance of fleas?

@Wolfiefan

He is nibbling it a lot. He had some matted fur there. Which is very odd because he was groomed on 22nd December. I am thinking because has been in water a lot he is more matted? Usually he only gets an occasional mat on his ear

Hibiscrub, use it well diluted to get all the mud out. Then check well for fleas. Do a couple of days of training walks well away from mud.

The flecks are mud. I have not washed him as thoroughly the last few days on account of the soreness

Could be mud making it tangle.
Flea treated recently?

2021ishere2021 · 25/01/2021 23:08

@Wolfiefan

He had a flea treatment in December with his vaccinations.

I am hoping it is mud that has caused the tangle. I have him booked in with the groomer tomorrow, she said she will know when she inspects his coat!

Hope that all goes well. Be aware some flea treatments are ineffective. Frontline etc.
Could you do some less muddy walks? Eg a road walk once a day?

TheoriginalLEM · 26/01/2021 00:40

What flea treatment are you using? If its a spot on, daily baths will decrease the length of time it goes on for.

The redness is simply a sign of irritation, this could have lots of causes. Fleas make dogs geberally itchy, they then aggravate an area where they are scratching and it becomes a vicious circle. You can check for flea dirt by brushing onto to damp kitchen roll. If any of the flecks turn red they are flea dirts.

Another thing to consider is what you are bathing him with? Human shampoo is the wrong pH and can cause irritation.

Keep an eye on it, if it becomes really angry will need treating so try and prevent scratching if you can.

Hibiscrub is quite astringent and not really suitable for everyday use. I agree with keeping away from mud for a bit so can reduce bathing.

@MrsPernicious @TheoriginalLEM @Wolfiefan

Thanks for your help. He doesn't have flies thank goodness. Apparently it is just irritation from the mud.

Has Anyone got a recommendation for the best repellant? The groomer said the spot on we have would not be recommended. She suggested the picture attached.

That’s what we use OP! Never had an issue.

TheoriginalLEM · 26/01/2021 22:53

Nexiguard will be fine for bathing, he needs this monthly i believe.

TheoriginalLEM · 26/01/2021 22:55

The groomer cannot dispense the nexiguard as it is a prescription only medication which must be prescribed by a vet or possibly an SQP

I went to the vet and she gave me these, 1 every 3 months
