What to expect after ddog gets spayed

My lovely girl is 2 and due to covid has had her spaying op delayed a couple of times.

She's going this week to have it done and I just wanted a bit of advice as to what to expect and how to care for her afterwards?

Not really as in wound care/stuff the vet can advise on but more your own experiences of how things like mood/play/energy and appetite have been affected? Is she likely to act a bit poorly for a while?

Normally a VERY energetic and fun loving girl. Am slightly concerned it may affect her personality a bit too, has this been people's experience?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Ours is 13 months and just been spayed. She had a bad first season and phantom pregnancy so I wish we’d had it done before.

She had it done 16 days ago. And she’s absolutely back to herself now,
She was grumpy for about 4 days and tired and mostly just slept. We were just nice to her, didn’t let her jump up and down, which she doesn’t d9 anyway really. And lifted her up like a lamb. Which was good as she’s used to 2 long off lead walks a day and could only do 10 minutes on lead.

We did a lot of hiding treats in boxes and stuff to keep her occupied once she’d woken up.

She wouldn’t wear the cone round her neck so we fashioned an old t shirt and tied it round her to stop her licking. That wasn’t enough. So used a toddlers vest and cut a hole in it for her tail and that worked as she couldn’t get into it. If you don’t have one I’d recommend ordering a couple.

But as she had already licked away it meant she had to spend an additional week on short lead walks and with the vest on. That was a pain.

She’s absolutely fine now though. She’s a cockerpoo.

She’s also gone back to her old pre phantom pregnancy self, she’d started getting snappy with other dogs and wary of them, she isn’t now.

Thank you, that's reassuring to hear

Ours suffered quite badly after for a week, wouldn't eat, apart from small amounts hand fed, wouldn't drink apart from small sips if you brought bowl to her and didn't move at all, every once in a while she would obviously feel sore and scuttle about trying to run away from the pain then flop back down again. Had to carry her into the garden to pee and she would only go once in a 24 hour period. On day 7 we went out for a walk with the kids, left her in her crate and came back and it was like she'd been replaced by another dog, pottering about like normal. She is two weeks post now, totally back to normal, wound well healed and she is as mad as she ever was.

Good luck OP! It is tough emotionally (probably more for you than for Ddog.) we did Ddog around 12 months— I’m really pleased we did as she had a terrible first season & a phantom pregnancy. The first day she was very miserable, I lay with her on the floor & she slept in the bed in a funny position (on her back all night!) The following day she was sort of Ok, and the day after that she was back to normal. They made her wear a little suit, not a cone. You might want to get some pads in case she isn’t feeling up to going for walks. I found it emotionally tough to see her unhappy— but it was definitely for the best. Also— she has refused to go back to the vet since, so be wary of her follow up visit!

Thanks all. It's done and it was as you said... first day very sad dog, second day a little better, third day much better. I am now trying in vain to keep her from being her normal loopy self so she doesn't damage her wound 🙄😆

Have you seen a vet for this? We had a bitch that suffered similarly and a few drops of urilin in her food stopped this quickly and easily.

She had to have the drops for th rest o her life, but they were a very easy 'fix'.

Just mentioning in case this isn't something you've thought about.
