Missed vaccination by four weeks!

For our rescue pup we got last June. I feel such a failure but it's been a peculiar few weeks. Because he's a rescue we got no annual reminder.

It was due in the 23rd December. He is just 15 months now.

A little research says they should just give the booster as usual?

He's a nightmare at the vets too and they are collecting from the car at the moment. It's so stressful taking him to they vet even though I have only been twice. (That's not the reason I just genuinely forgot)

For clarity- will I need to restart the course of vaccine?

Any advice gratefully received

You shouldn't need to restart. Most of the vaccines last at least some time past 12 months - it isn't an exact science. In fact my vet says that it is more about added peace of mind and establishing routine to do them annually, and the gap could be longer. You are definitely not the first person to have forgotten for a few weeks. And in the early days of lockdown vets couldn't even administer them as they were not urgent.

@Moondust001 thank you. I will heave to call the vet on Monday.

Don't panic it's fine. Last year my dogs boosters were due in lockdown and they said it's fine to wait longer and wouldn't actually let us take him. It was more than a month overdue when they let us book him in.

chipsandpeas · 23/01/2021 22:29

my vet says they are covered for approx 3 month extra as they have delayed one of my dogs from december to Feb for her vaccinations

cautiouscovidity · 23/01/2021 22:34

Our cats had their annual vaccinations a bit late this year due to lockdown. The vet said they're fine so long as they're within 3 months of the due date (so no more than 15 months from last dose). I'd imagine the same would apply for dogs but check with the vet.

Thanks everybody- this is all very reassuring.

Just an update in case anyone else looking for this info. it's now 12 weeks leeway after the 12 months (the manufacturer changed guideline during Covid)
