Car for Saluki cross

Obvs not for the dog to drive!
We are getting a Saluki cross pup. It's parents are 24" and 26". If you have a dog this size, what car do you have? How much boot space/car cage is needed?

We drive a van and have a large crate in the boot of it. For a St Bernard.

Enjoy your puppy Smile

Ah looking more for a car than a van!

Long dogs fold up small. Standard estate car boot should be more than enough-I had a larger than lab size Lurcher and Megane then Scenic boots were fine though all my dogs have ended up ensconced on the comfy car seats anyway

moosemama · 22/01/2021 16:27

We had two Lurchers (one a touch off 29” tts and the other 24 ish) in the boot of our Golf estate with bags of room to spare. We now only have the smaller boy and he’s lost in there without his brother. Sad

For just one, the size you’re getting, pretty much any estate car would be ok, just check out head-room, as well as length.

Very Envy of your Saluki x pup, both mine had/have Saluki in their mix - best dogs ever! Grin

CMOTDibbler · 22/01/2021 16:36

I have a Saluki x (and a whippety dobie x something) and mine have fitted into : Seat Leon estate, Skoda Superb estate, Honda CRV (2006 and 2019) and half the boot of a Land Rover Defender.
If you have just one dog, I'd recommend a boot divider as it stops them fidgeting around.
Salukis are mad as boxes of frogs, and I hope you are ready for puppy zoomies!

moosemama · 22/01/2021 17:16

I’d agree about the boot divider @CMOTDibbler. I’m getting frustrated with dh at the moment, as he won’t let me buy one because he wants to change my car this year.

If you only have one dog, a divider also has the advantage of giving you luggage/storage space as well as somewhere for your dog, best of both worlds.

My old lad used to like to stand widthways across the boot, blocking my rear view. His favourite time to do it, was just as I started reversing into a parking space. Hmm I kept meaning to buy a divider then, to stop him doing it, but never got around to it.

CostaDelCovid · 22/01/2021 18:38

Genuinely thought the title was a typo for the Suzuki S cross car...... Speaking off, that would actually be a good option

CMOTDibbler · 22/01/2021 19:04

@moosemama ddog2 likes to stand up just as you are reversing too. Of the many things I love about my new Defender, the fact that it has external cameras so I don't have to try and look through the dogs to see behind me is really a great boon. And being able to put things in the boot - its so cavernous that the two of them have plenty of room behind the divider and still loads of room for luggage on the other

Santaiscovidfree · 22/01/2021 19:07

Our saluki cross sits lovely with a harness and seat belt. We also have an entire back seat waterproof cover.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/01/2021 19:18

Thanks so much. We are coincidentally changing the car so want to get something suitable. So rear camera goes on the essential list. Boot divider rather than crate/cage?

Unless you are going for the nuclear option of a custom build car crate, then the trouble with lurchers is they are so tall that a crate gets unwieldy. A dog guard and divider gives them the full head height and a space you can tailor to them.
Getting puppies to settle in the boot (lots of tiny trips) is the best route in the long term imo. Salukis have very strong nails, and its easy for them to mess up your seats

moosemama · 22/01/2021 19:54

We had a crate when he was a pup, but they quickly get too tall for the crate to fit comfortably in the car. I also prefer them to be able to stand up and stretch, which they can’t do if there’s restricted head room.

We have a dog guard and tailgate guard and my ideal set up would also include a divider and parking cameras.

tabulahrasa · 22/01/2021 23:01

I had a slightly bigger lurchery shaped dog (don’t know for definite what he was)

He could curl up in the passenger footwell of a Ford Fiesta ConfusedGrin

Didn’t drive him like that, obviously, but he kept trying, lol

moosemama · 22/01/2021 23:38

@Santaiscovidfree my boy managed to take up an entire lino floor in less than half an hour the first time we left him alone with our other dogs. He wasn’t stressed or upset, in fact he was extremely proud of himself. We couldn’t be too upset though, as he discovered the original quarry tile floors underneath, so we just finished what he started and now have a lovely tiled floor.

When he was about 9 months old we also came home from the school run one day to find him stood in the middle of the kitchen table, merrily consuming the contents of the fruit bowl. (Fortunately we keep grapes in the fridge not the fruit bowl.) Again, super proud of himself. The dcs still laugh about it and he’s 15 years old now!
