Whilst you’re working from home?

Mine would sit with me all day curled on my lap, but I feel like I should be doing a bit more for her mind!

She gets two walks a day, we play with her, and there’s a rotation of toys - though we struggle with this as there’s very few things she can be left with without v v close monitoring because she destroys them and accidentally eats bits.

Then once a day she get a frozen kong or a chew or a licky mat. - that lasts approx 30 seconds

I’d like to give her some other things to do and I feel a bit bad for her, can you inspire me with your dogs activities?

Couldn’t wake them up if we tried!!

RandomMess · 19/01/2021 15:17

Mine sleeps.

DH has always worked from home apparently she has always slept all day only now she sleeps where she can keep an eye on me or Uber the duvet with a teenager 🤮

He gets 2 walks a day and generally follows us around the rest of the time or we play with him. He’s currently asleep in front of the fire place. He’s very badly treated.

I wouldn't force her to do something if she seems happy to chill - honestly, the ability to just relax at home is a really good skill for a dog to have.

Mine is currently laying by the fire with one of the cats. He had a walk this morning, he's been fed and he's had a nap.

As PP it's good that that she is settled. If she is happy and not stressed or showing any destructive bored behaviour I wouldn't change anything.

Nogardenersworld · 19/01/2021 18:16

Omg this makes me feel so much better

I thought she was maybe depressed Blush

I think dogs are usually only away something like 4-6 hours out of 24. Mine gets tired and grumpy if she doesn't get enough daytime sleep Grin

Ours sleeps most of the day. Comes to remind me that she needs her dental chew about 10.30, then appears again at lunchtime to prompt either a walk or some games (she's reactive so we alternate days between a walk or a day at home to keep stress levels down).

Games are usually scent work (we've trained her to sniff out an empty Kong and we hide this all over the house), or she plays with her Buster mat and other toys I can hide treats in, or we work on putting the toys back in the toy basket. I'm trying to teach her to recognise and fetch her toys by name but that's slow going!

After that she will sleep for most of the afternoon until tea, then we get the witching hour which involves her shoving all her toys at us until one of us gives in and get down on the floor to play, which involves playing tug, hiding toys for her to find and pretending they are lost, and just general rolling about and wrestling and belly rubs.

Then more napping until bedtime!

If she does get a bit restless in the day she sometimes gets a knucklebone to chew on, or a treat ball stuffed with something that will take her ages to eat.

Thanks all, she won’t walk in the rain either and it’s pouring down today, but I’m glad she’s not the only dog snoozing most of the day. She’s curled up on me right now. Grin

Asleep, zonked on the sofas.

RandomMess · 20/01/2021 15:09

Mine rouses herself to accompany anyone to the kitchen that is cooking, you know just in case something needs tidying from the floor

If she doesn't get enough daytime sleep she gets barky at any sounds in the house not that she musters the energy to investigate to see if someone has come into the house and try to protect us or anything 🙄

Mine refuses walks in the rain too she'd rather sleep.

My boy is an oldie (15) and has arthritis so only has short walks these days.

He gets up at 6.00 when dh gets up, goes straight out in the garden, then has his breakfast and meds, then goes out in the garden again. We sort breakfast for the family, then take him for his morning walk. All done by about 8.50.

He then sleeps until 10.30/11.00 ish, when he goes out for a wee and I walk him round the garden to get his joints moving. Then it’s back to bed, usually snuggled under a blanket, where he snoozes until 12.30 ish when he does a bit of brain training or has a a kong wobbler or lickimat.

Sometimes he gets a short walk with dh when he stops for lunch, but not every day. If he’s not walking at lunchtime he’ll sleep again until 3.30, when he starts demanding his snuffle mat and another trip to the garden. Then back to sleep until his dinner at 6.30 and another trip to the garden.

He has his last walk around 7.30/8.00 ish, has his teeth brushed and then back to snoozing.

He tells us when he thinks it’s time to go to bed, via highly perfected use of Paddington stares and lots of huffing. It used to be about 10.30, but as he’s getting older it’s creeping earlier and earlier. The last couple of weeks it’s been 9.40ish, so now we’re having to wake him up for a last wee of the night before we go to bed ourselves.

He knows his schedule and it’s basically driven by him. If he doesn’t wake up for something, we let him sleep, unless it’s been too long and his joints will be stiffening up, in which case we do have to wake him and walk him up and down the garden or round the house a bit. We find if it’s a really cold day he’s more likely to sleep through for longer, so we keep him wrapped up warm and get him to move around the house a bit, rather than dragging him out on freezing walks.

Dogs do need a lot of sleep and doing too much can over-stimulate them and leave them unable to settle themselves. If your dog is happy and settled it probably means you are getting the balance right.

DDdog (1 year old) potters round while we have breakfast, then we have a walk. She then snoozes for about 3 hours, and when she wakes up wants to play. I fend her off until lunchtime, then take her for a walk, after which she snoozes most of the afternoon. A final walk late afternoon and she plays for a bit/watches me cook in case I drop something tasty/greets DD from school and they play.

So about 60-80 minutes of 'walks' spread out over 3 trips - walks may include playing with other dogs, running in circles, or hunting squirrels, or gently investigating interesting scents. About 30-40 minutes of playtime in 5-10 minute chunks. A bit of pottering.

The rest snoozing, and by about 6/7pm she is ready to go to bed and sleep for 12 hours.

If your DDog seems settled and happy I wouldn't worry about it.
