Dog proof sofa/ chairs?

Our two lurchers are our babies and can do almost no wrong in our eyes! However we are now doing up our open plan kitchen/ dining/ hangout space and would like a seating area which is, well, useable by respectable humans.

Currently there's 2 ancient sofas which over the years have had the cushions shredded and de-stuffed by occasional but enthusiastic couch cushion "digging". One is a reclining fake leather type chair which they have destroyed effortlessly. Both sofas have permanent sofa covers over the top, which are also shredded. We haven't minded up to now as the layout of the room meant only the dogs used or saw that bit of the space. However, now the layout is changing the seating area will be in full view, and use, by us and guests.

Is there such thing as a sofa that enthusiastically digging nails won't destroy??! Or any ideas to protect a sofa when we are not there?

P.s. the dogs are happy, well looked after, well socialised, and well exercised - they are so good in the house and couches are the only thing they ever destroy - but it's a bit of a biggie!

To be honest if they did that to sofas and I couldn't keep them away from them while I was out, I'd be of the mind that no sofas are impervious to 'digging' with dog claws and I'd be buying lovely new dog beds and training them to stop going on the sofas before the new ones arrived - can of coins to shake when they went on the sofas and a doggie treat when they go in their beds.

Real leather is hard to shred (four rescues here!)

They have very luxurious beds already - they even have a folded up duvet on top of each bed(!) but are, like all good lurchers, both sofa-holics and good at forgetting training when their owners walk out the door!!

I will look into real leather sofas, thank you

Maybe someone could make some vetbed slipcovers for the seat cushions as that stuff stands up well to claws and then can whip off to wash or when guests over.

Waterproof backing could be a good idea for the potential risk of vomit or leaks in future Hmm

Vetbed slipcovers are an amazing idea!

We've got leather sofas and they have stood the test of time from our horde including a husky cross who has the destructive tendencies of a Tazmanian Devil. They are all one moulded seat that sits on a wooden frame rather than separate cushions so harder for them to dig into i think. just give them a wipe down and chuck a throw on when humans arrive.
