So we are currently on a breeders list for a pup that will hopefully be born around April once mating has happened.

I’m so excited and can’t wait!

Anyway, we have a cat (1year) who at night sleeps in the kitchen. I was thinking of crating pup in the livingroom at night (if I can fit it somewhere lol).

Obviously I have to get up with pup through the night to let them out. How do I deal with having to go through the kitchen to get outside, do I pick them up and carry them outside? Or do I let them walk/wind the cat up lol. We don’t have a cat flap so would prefer cat to not get out in the night lol.

Ahh, I didn’t think this through lol.

Or do I take out the front?

Advice please!

Also, what size crate? It’s a golden retriever and hopefully a female x

Can the cat sleep in a different room? I would walk the pup out as either way the cat will be disturbed and have the opportunity to get out, and you won't be able to lift a golden retriever forever!

There’s not really anywhere else
For cat to sleep as the stairs go into the livingroom and she just ends up sitting outside our room meowing all night lol

This is something we struggled with. Can pup go out of the front door to use the toilet during the night? Where do you want pup to sleep eventually,?

We try to let our pup walk to the door when we take him to the garden, as I feel he’ll make the “toilet outside” connection better if he’s walking himself there. This is only during the day, as we carry him up and down stairs during the night

If you can't get the cat to sleep elsewhere I would take the dog out the front. If you are lucky it will only be for a couple of weeks then they will sleep through the night.

Another option would be puppy pads but I wouldn't recommend for a larger breed, and it can delay house training.

We have this every night - initially there was quite a bit of barking but both know the routine now. I pat the counter and the cat jumps up on it, open the kitchen door, the dog slides the cat an evil look and goes straight out the back. Reverse on being let in. DDog is very jealous of the cat so if I was holding him, it would be more of a palaver.

I’d use a treat to keep the cat ‘up’ and then usher DPuppy in and out, straight line to the back door.

I'd just put the pup on a lead to walk past the cat. In fact having the dog on a lead for the first few weeks around the cat helps as the cat won't get chased and so should learn not to run
