Just wonder if anyone has a papillon? Are they hypoallergenic? I have allergy to cats but usually okay with dogs. Though I used to have dogs when was little and I didn’t have any problems with them then. But just want to be sure if this is the right breed of dogs we can consider.

Hi. Sorry I don't know about Paillions (apart from that they are amazingly cute!).

There really is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. It's a nonsense to get more people to buy dogs really.

There are low shedding dogs though (I have a poodle - I never see hairs on my clothes or furniture).

There's no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. Some dogs, such as poodles or bichon frise, don't shed so they cause less problems, but most people are allergic to the spit and dander, and no dog comes without either!

Are you actually allergic to dogs or did you just want a breed that's low shedding?

Dog allergies are quite unpredictable I find.

I say I’m allergic to dogs but in truth some affect me more than others. I’ve been reduced to a wheezy sneezy mess by Labradors and Dobermans but my brother’s lurcher (bedlington terrier x whippet) doesn’t bother me a bit.

My mum is allergic to dogs and she had a papillon without any issues. He was a lovely dog.

Oh oh I was going to post asking about papillons but more generally! Are they good dogs for a family - I know they’re not recommended for small children so would youngest child have to be 4/5, or older? Also are they v yappy and is it true they are hard to housetrain? If anyone has direct experience I would love to hear!

Thanks ladies, I have allergy to cats. So far dogs don’t seem to affect me however having one and have it in the house 24/7 is a different thing.

Thanks 2021willbetheyear, I want to ask these questions about too. We are very closing to get a papillon puppy atm. Have been reading a lot of websites but found many mixed opinions about them. Can they be left alone in a play pan for a couple of hours so I can go to do my essential shoppings or doctor surgery. Everyone in my family are happy to share responsibilities but still there will be time it need to be on its own just for a couple of hours.

I grew up with a papillon, and have very fond memories of him; we got him when I was about 5 and he died when I was 17. They're quite a rare breed, so I'll confess I get quite excited when I see one out in the 'wild'!

To this day, he was the most temperamentally bombproof dog I've ever met - really sweet with everyone (unlike the other DDog who had opinions). I don't actually remember him putting a foot wrong in that regard, even after being attacked by other dogs a couple of times, with serious injuries on one occasion.

He only really barked at the doorbell (helpful, when you have deaf family members!). He did have a tendency to wee bloody everywhere in the house mark his territory, but I'm fairly certain that could have been trained out of him with some more effort, plus he wasn't neutered. They're very intelligent dogs and often used for agility etc., and so while ours was generally undertrained no recall for starters that was solely because no one actually put the effort in - it just wasn't considered necessary by that generation.

Definitely not hypoallergenic or non-shedding though - we were finding long white hairs for years after he died!

Mind you, this is only my memories of one dog - each has a personality of its own and is different.

I am also looking at chihuahuas and about to go to view one later. Has can anyone share what you know about chihuahuas?

You might not even be allergic to any dogs - my husband is massively allergic to cats but not dogs at all. You really need to know before getting any dog...

Same here. If I touch a cat and then touch my face I come up all puffy and with running eyes. On the other hand I can touch dogs (and one sleeps in my bed) with no ill effects whatsoever.
