Can't rescue. Looking for a puppy

parrotkiddymum · 08/01/2021 18:19

I know rescue is better. Due to kids ages we can't rescue.
Our last dog unfortunately passed away last August.
I don't know if this is allowed so feel free to report! (Long time poster. Just nc for this post)
I can't seem to find anyone that is reliable on getting back to me about puppies.
Everyone I sent messages to either doesn't respond or promises more photos and I never receive them. So I was wondering if anyone here or knows someone breeding border terriers?
Thanks

Try the kennel club website and get on a breeder's waiting list.

As you know, the puppy market has gone ape since covid. Breeders, good and bad have been inundated. TBH, I’d be holding off for a bit. If you can’t, have you looked at Champdogs? Even if no litters on there yet, you can look for breeders and ask what their schedule looks like, if they have any planned litters in the pipeline. Also go through the breed club puppy directory and so the same. Avoid gumtree, Facebook & Pets4Homes. Do your due diligence (health and welfare) the breeding of puppy farm and backyard pups has gone through the roof. Be prepared to wait for a well bred pup.

One of DHs friends is a OES breeder.
They have temporarily stopped breeding and are of the opinion that no reputable breeder in it for the ‘right’ reasons is breeding right now.
I don’t necessarily agree with them but I would certainly be very, very careful.
The current situation is a puppy farmers dream.

I enquired earlier in the year about joining a waiting list for a reasonably popular breed for summer 2021, after I saw a future breeding announcement on the breed club website. The breeder told us they had received 400 emails in the first 4 days since the advert went up. It's totally insane just now.

muddyford · 10/01/2021 17:01

Rescue is not best. The best is that every puppy lives with its loving family all its life with all its requirements met. Rescue only deals with dogs for whom this ideal situation didn't happen, for whatever reason. I hope you find your puppy in due course and have a long and happy time together.

bunnygeek · 11/01/2021 10:14

FYI some breeders won't sell to families with very young children either. There's usually a good reason many rescue dogs can't live with young kids.

Have you had dogs before? Have the kids been around dogs before? Remember, puppies have needle sharp teeth and will take months of teething and training before they stop using them.

If you want a Border in particular, you may need to wait for some time before reputable breeders open up their waiting lists again. Yep, this last year has been INSANE.

Breeders have had so many emails they've got 2 year waiting lists, rescues have had less dogs handed in as owners have either kept their dogs or sold them on freelistings for a profit instead.

Basically, you're probably looking at a 2 year wait for a reputable breeder. Plenty of chancers and puppy farms cashing in in the meantime, avoid anyone who miraculously has puppies available right now. They're the chancers.

bunnygeek · 11/01/2021 10:16

Ah sorry I just saw you lost your last dog recently. so ignore that bit. Puppies are still going to be a lot different and those who've lost older dogs may well have rose tinted glasses looking back at the last time they had a puppy.

Maves · 11/01/2021 10:18

Don't get a dog now, they are being bred badly and sold at 3x the amount it's ridiculous. Any proper breeder won't be breeding to feed people's "lockdown puppy" faze

YouBoughtMeAWall · 11/01/2021 10:20

There’s no such thing as “can’t wait for a dog”. It’s not an essential so of course OP can wait. And it’s what I would advise too.

Local responsible breeders here have said they won’t be planning any litters for some time until the covid situation has settled. They don’t want to be responsible for impulse buys and having to take back 6 month old puppies.

OP sounds like you have young DC too. I reckon a couple of years waiting is a good idea.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 11/01/2021 14:56

In your shoes I'd join a breed FB page, where you should be able to find some breeders and stud dog owners. Ask questions, become 'known'. Also look up breeder and stud owners on ChampDogs and ring a few up.

Some reputable people are breeding - they might have a bitch who is about to season and will soon be to old for a first litter, or they have planned a litter for a long time and have some homes lined up already. I know someone who'll be breeding this year (working dogs though) and she's been preparing for ages - health tests, training, proving her dogs in the field - and she is 100% legit. You just have to be very careful at the moment.

I’d ring the secretaries of the breed clubs, don’t know how many Birder a Terrier clubs there are, sorry, but the contact numbers will be on the KC website, as it varies eg my main breed only has one U.K. club but another breed I have a couple of has four clubs. Let them know that you are wanting a puppy & if they can’t put you in touch with any members currently, to get you on the breeder grapevine, ask if they’d kindly keep your contact details to alert you if they hear anything in the future.
Have to warn you though that none, really none, of the other breeders & exhibitors I know are currently having or even planning litters till this madness is over. Only exception I know is one who’s toy breed always has very small litters, 2or3 at most, who’s planning to keep them except, if there’s more than two puppIes, to give one to the showing friend who’s champion stud she’s going to use.

Darklane · 11/01/2021 15:45

Sorry, Border Terriers, not Birders....those are usually cats Blush

PoleToPole · 11/01/2021 15:55

There are reputable breeders still breeding, some people need working dogs, not just pets, and sometimes, admittedly rarely, you cannot wait.
Years ago, my working dog was unexpectedly diagnosed with a lift limiting illness with aggressive progression, and so I need to get a pup as soon as possible to learn from him and then take over his job when he passed.
It was a huge shock, I had planned to get a pup a few years from then to gradually take over OlderDogs duties, but had to speed up the timeframe. So it really isnt true to say theres no such thing as cant wait.

PoleDogs breeder, highly reputable, very respected, and with years of experience (Ive had four dogs from her over the last thirty years, shes become a good friend) has a litter expected any day now, all are going to working homes, but she doesnt sell to pet homes as the breed (Great Pyrs) just aren`t suitable for that.

So as PPs say, be careful, do your due diligence and take the time to search for the right dog and breeder for you, even if it takes longer.

Totally different scenario for a working dog than for a pet. Of course you can’t wait for a working dog- they are providing a service. A pet, everyone can wait for a pet.
