Hi, we have a 15 month springer who we’ve had for 4 months. Rehomed with us as we’re experienced dog people and they couldn’t cope. He’s a very high energy dog and we’ve put a lot of effort and time into training him. He’s much much better than he was, but he is a nightmare to get back into the house from the garden. Any tips?
He’s not food motivated at all. He’s very ball and stick motivated but even that doesn’t work.

Walked 2x a day for 90 minutes each time, lots of training and games at home.

What happens if you just go in? Given the weather I can't imagine he stays out long!!

Heffle · 05/01/2021 12:16

Oh I get this - go in and shut the door and she pops up scratching at it pretty fast! Getting faster each time now. Equally there’s something worrying for her about me standing inside or in the doorway, so much prefers to trot in after me (for food) but for you could be a toy/ball/tug. Following is easier than coming to a person standing still. Hoping it’s a phase 😀

Leave him outside till he’s ready to come in?

Providing your garden is secure of course

TheTempest · 05/01/2021 13:34

We do normally leave him outside until he wants to come in, but he then barks at the door which isn’t ideal. Sometimes if I pat him on the head and then go in and occasionally that works.

Does he like squeaky toys? Post pee throw one back into the house... Our ddog would do a jig for a squeaky toy..

PollyRoulson · 05/01/2021 15:13

Only let him into the garden on a lead

pigsDOfly · 05/01/2021 15:46

My dog loves to have a wander around the garden in the evening. She enjoys the cold air and will even just sit in the rain sometimes.

In the current weather I close the door but keep a watch on her but my garden is small and very secure.

If you're not happy for him to be out there on his own I'd put him on a long training lead so he's got a bit of freedom but you can bring him in when you want to.

Bigsighall · 05/01/2021 15:48

Put him on a long line?

Justcashnosweets · 05/01/2021 18:25

My 12 year old Springer can be like this, especially when its snowing! He just loves being outside, especially in the snow. I find if I close the back door, he wants to come in almost immediately 🤣

vanillandhoney · 05/01/2021 19:08

I would just leave him outside - the odd bark at the back door really isn't anything to worry about.

Or as PP said, you could take him out on a lead so he has no choice, but it is pretty restrictive and involves you going out in shoes/coat etc. in the pouring rain Grin

Tumbleweed101 · 06/01/2021 17:58

Long line when you need him to come straight in - ie his bedtime wee - and shutting the door and leaving him at other times. I've got one that did this for a while but hes less interested I staying outside now its colder!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 06/01/2021 18:06

My Springer does this to my husband all the time. She seems to be trying to get him to play.

I have put a tennis ball that has a squicker in it by the door. If she prats him about he plays with the ball noisily by the door until she comes to get it.

My lovely darling never does it to me. She knows who is bossGrin

fitflopqueen · 06/01/2021 23:33

My springer used to do this at a similar age, she was just trying to be boss. Wouldn't be caught and would run round very excited... so ignoring her worked wonders. Now 5, she can still be a madam at times but is generally more mature about obedience.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 07/01/2021 00:53

Obviously a Springer speciality Grin

InsertRudeWord · 07/01/2021 01:07

Pair coming back in with something amazing inside? Bone, ball game inside.

The only problem with doing this is they then mess around and ask to go out just all they get the treat HmmGrin

eyes beagle suspiciously

My lab (last one standing at 14 1/2) has learned that she gets snacks when she comes in from the garden. We only started giving them to her to persuade her into the garden to pee when she started to lose her mobility. Except now she hobbles and demands to go out appropriately every fifty seconds, and then does nothing but turn round and ask to come in, sitting and looking expectantly in the general direction of the snack jar. There’s no eyeing suspiciously here, we know dammed well what she’s doing, but as she’s basically blind, deaf, and needs help standing up if she’s lying on the hardwood, she can have as many snacks as she needs to keep moving Grin
I clicked on the thread because we are expecting our springer puppy to be born this week - been on the waiting list for sooooo long since before the pandemic started. Am mildly concerned that lab-chops is so much older now, but we’ll cope.
Tell me everything I need to know about springers!!!! Grin
