Dogs gone in 2020

Anybody else finding themselves ruminating over pets they've lost at the turn of this year?

Looked at too many photos of my lovely dog we lost in January this year and missing him terribly.

Think we'll look to get a puppy this year, won't be at all the same but it's time, things are too quiet without him.

We lost our puppy as well this year, he was 9 months and got immune mediated haemolytic anaemia . He didn’t respond to treatment. It did break our hearts and still get tearful on occasion .
We did decide to get another puppy who is great ( and currently snoozing beside me on the sofa) .

@FelicityBennett I am so sorry. He was beautiful. IMHA is an evil disease and 9 months is far, far too young.

My boy had IMT (Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia) so platelets, rather than rbc and was also one of the unlucky ones who didn’t respond to the treatment. (We eventually discovered he had another blood related condition - Greyhound Hyperfibrinolysis - as well, which on it’s own wasn’t a problem, but worked against the treatment.)

So pleased to hear you have another pup to share your love.

FelicityBennett · 02/01/2021 13:40

Thanks , this is new pup . Has helped I think having him but was v hard seeing Ziggy’s puppy friends all grown up as we do the same walks with Reg
Sorry about your dog, especially after his start in life . Sorry for everyone who has lost a dog.

Aw, your new pup is gorgeous. They are never replacements and can’t take away the loss or fill the hole in your heart, but there’s always room in your heart for one more and I’ve tended to find the distraction helpful - after all, you are too busy to dwell when you are chasing a pup around 24/7.

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 02/01/2021 15:55

We also got a dpuppy. A welcome distraction and focus. She actually has some of ddogs traits.. We joked on ddog had given her some tips before she left us as there was a few weeks when we had both.. Decision had been made to pts a few weeks before it actually happened..

I lost my dog on 18/12/2020. She was almost 19. My heart is broken. Thanks for sharing the stories of all your babies may they all play at rainbow bridge

I am so sorry for all of your losses of your beautiful dogs. We lost Simon our 10 year old American bulldog to cancer in March. He was a gentle soppy boy who barely moved, and would do one giant bark and then that was it when anyone got home. We’d had him only 4 years as he was a rescue and a bundle of love.

Then, devastatingly we lost my little Milo in August to a horrific car accident. He was only 16 months and was a little angel boy. He used to prance sideways when he was excited and loved playing in the trampoline. Just a wonderful fun and loving boy.
It’s been a hard year this one 😢

Really sorry. I hope you are some way along recovering from these losses

Oh gosh. We lost our lovely lurcher Oz this afternoon. Osteosarcoma. He died during the operation to remove his leg.

We were lucky. We chose the surgery/chemo route and never had to make the final decision. 8am today he was lying on my bed having a snuggle. He toddled off to the vet without a care in the world. He was 11, had a long and varied life (and career), and was adored and cossetted in his final years. It's all good and we are very lucky to have had him

But there's no one lying on the sofa, no one to be Very Pleased to get a last bonio tonight, and it is pretty much the end of the world.

I am so sorry. I know how you feel right now but probably shocked too. Please look after the family and yourself x

There is no pain as bad as losing a beloved dog you have had from a tiny puppy. I think only losing a child could be worse. Try to remember your dog's had lots of love and a very happy life whilst alive. I think making a photo collage in a frame of beloved pets no longer with you is therapeutic. On the wall they are still with you.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 07/01/2021 23:28

Lost our lovely GSD, Odin, in autumn.

He was a massive PITA because he was so clever, but I was so proud when total strangers would approach me and ask if I was the one with the really well trained dog. Only happened a few times, but it made all the hard work we put in with him feel noticed, somehow.

I'm sorry for all of your losses.

Goldrill · 07/01/2021 23:28

Thanks curlymom, and I am very sorry for your loss also. My girls are 8 and 10 and already a bit at sea as we moved house, changed schools, can't see grandparents and now no school.... and no Oz. I only know colleagues in new town and used to spend a lot of time chatting to the dog, poor chap!

This too shall pass.

Thanks I admire your strength, something I have been lacking since losing my girl. I will try to think of the good times. It’s so hard, she was literally my shadow

I'm sorry for everyone who has lost their beloved dogs.

My family lost our chocolate Labrador Emma in June 2020 when she was almost 16. She'd had pancreatitis the year before and her kidneys were failing, but was doing pretty well considering. Unfortunately, one morning she went out to the toilet and her back legs just completely gave way. She just looked exhausted and seemed to be telling my parents it was time. I found out while at work and had to say goodbye over video call.

Our family absolutely adored Emma and she felt like the centre of it. She was definitely more family than pet. My parents got a new puppy quite quickly as they hated not having a dog around. She is gorgeous and we love her, but certainly haven't forgotten or replaced our beautiful, beloved Emma.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 08/01/2021 12:21

Manny died on the 2nd November. I knew he was unwell - his lungs and his kidneys were failing and he started to having fits. He passed away in my arms as we were going to the vets. He was 13 - only middle aged for a terrier.

I had sat up with him many nights in the previous weeks and had already decided that when he went I would get a new dog. Two weeks after he died I brought home a JR puppy as different from Manny as he could be. I will always miss him and he will never be replaced but the puppy is everything I hoped for and more.

We lost our big handsome greyhound we buy has him fir 2 years died suddenly of a massive seizure just before his 7th birthday, he was my first ever dog and still miss him. We have a new rescue greyhound totally different was very hard convincing family as they felt disloyal bit there is always another rescue Greyhound who needs us. It’s just circle of life but I never thought losing a dog would be this bad xxx bigs hugs to you all

Sitdowncupoftea · 11/01/2021 14:29

I've lots two of my dogs in 2020 and my cat. My dogs were 12 and the other one almost 14. My cat was 16. They all had good long lives. The only thing annoying was having to pay extra money to be in the room with them due to covid. We miss them and my other dogs and cats miss them too. When you have had pets that long your going to miss them.

Darklane · 11/01/2021 16:00

I lost my beautiful little boy in June. He had cancer, diagnosed with just weeks to live but lived almost two more years, happily, my vet saw him every month & was amazed that “ he doesn’t know he’s ill” he did so well. Up till the final day when it suddenly went wrong for him. I too still have his ashes in the sitting room, can’t bear to have him away as he was always my constant shadow. I still cry most days.
