Help

Rehomed a dog 9 weeks ago he’s a street dog and so unknown past, he’s beautiful, good natured, good with the kids, no accidents in the house, keen to please all good. Sleeps in the kitchen and apart from a couple nights unsettled sleeps roughly 10-6/7 there on his own. Initially intended to crate him but he didn’t like it and things were going well so didn’t need to.

He has been hundreds in vet bills however due to bad tummy which then was worms and giardia then kennel cough, that all seemed resolved until 23rd when he’s started shitting for England including multiple times over night so am getting up when I hear him but still having overnight accidents. Calling vet today

I can cope with an ill animal and vet bills hadn’t even had time to insure him when that started and had intended to do it this week since he had seemed better

However his behaviour at night has become destructive

20th went out for couple hours came home to him having pulled all the kitchen towels down from the hooks and unbelievably chewed off one of the cooker knobs, no damage done we thought though was a concern and since actually that knob won’t work

23rd come down in night as he wants out to find he’s turned the top oven on, pulled off the knob cracked it - scared half to death we could have gassed us in our beds so Xmas Eve made a chipboard barrier to slot in front of oven to stop him accessing. Stupidly sprayed it with dog deterrent spray which upset him until he was in such a state we had to let him sleep in the dining room which is next to kitchen. He pooed on floor 4 times that night

Last night he Barked and whined at bedtime for almost an hour, went to let him out for poo then he barked and whined again went down settled him, got to bed midnight 2.30 go down as hear him and he’s torn the barrier down, opened the top oven, I find the grill pan on the floor, he’s torn 4 of 6 knobs off cooker, turned the oven on and damaged the knob so much it won’t go back on, we now have 1 ring, small top oven and grill.

He’s actually broken our oven. He could blow up our house. Have had no sleep yet he’s now happy sleeping in the dining room, I think part of it is he wants to be in the dining room as it has full length windows he sits in there most days ignoring us looking out at the world but for various reasons we can’t give it over to him at night.

I don’t know what to do? Husband wants to give him back as he’s dangerous maybe he is right?

Thanks again everyone
@LimitIsUp will look into that site thanks

He had access to dining room last night he wandered in at 9.45 so said goodnight and closed door, went down at 6.45 when woke up and except for 2 poos on floor (didn’t hear him overnight so no clue if he tried to tell us the needed out) no other damage so will take that as a win compared to nights before. He came calmly to the door this morning unlike the last few days when he’s been very agitated.

Need to contact local appliance repair companies today we have one working gas ring and the very slow top oven still expecting need for new oven.

I say no known history but from what we do know he was found living in a shopping centre, he’s super friendly to everyone (including other dogs) which I guess he would have to be to survive in that environment. He was picked up by the rescues partner shelter in Tuzla Bosnia luckily for him he never experienced the foul conditions in the public shelter but obviously whilst in the rescue centre environment he was caged with at least one other dog in quite a small cage. Whether he was a pet at one point or not we’re not sure he is 2 to 3 years old. Up until this week we’ve had no accidents inside the house, he knows his name which he will only have had since he came to us really as the shelter gave him a name for his passport, he sits for food he waits for food I can empty the bin around him quite successfully so he’s amazingly good in that regard as well. He doesn’t have any recall at this point I’m pretty sure if we open the door he would run for the hills and we’d never see him again. The only nervousness he shows is around plastic bags he does not like bags/bags for life (and the hoover but what dog does).

Appreciate we have a long road ahead which is absolutely fine as long as he and the house is safe

That sounds really positive! Obviously the stomach issues are ongoing but if he slept all night and didn't do any damage that sounds like a win to me Smile

Thanks for the update OP. Sounds like he is much happy in the dining room overnight.

Good news, OP. It can be so challenging and worrying when a dog's behaviour becomes difficult. Fingers crossed his digestion sorts itself out ASAP.

steppemum · 29/12/2020 15:51

well that's a positive update OP.

We have a rescue. As he settled, we experienced more and more 'bad' behaviour. It was as if for the first few weeks, he was perfectly behaved a she was on edge, the safer he felt the more he explored.

After we had had him for several months he started bin diving over night. We moved the bins behind a door.

At first he wanted to be close to someone over night, was scared to be alone, now he is not bothered.

We never heard him bark until we had had him for a year.
Some things continue to change over time.

Our rescue dog had very bad bloody diarrhoea when she arrived. We believe it was at least in part caused by stress, though she did have some antibiotics from the vet to help. We were advised to feed her Purina HA which is hypoallergenic. She is better now, but it took a little while. We've kept her on the Purina HA as she likes it and it suits her. It might be worth a try for you.

Can you safe-proof the dining room?

Sorry just read your update.

Might sound silly but my dog likes looking out of windows but is young and chews so he has to be caged at night ,he didn't like it until my husband laminated a poster of a window frame and street view and tied it to the end of the crate 😂
He now has a bedroom with a view and chooses to lay in his crate at night to look out of the window 🤣.my friends all laugh but it worked and I get some much needed sleep 😂
