Sharing a bedroom and having sex

I'm hoping I can get some different perspectives on this. We have a lovely rescue dog. We've managed to get her used to sleeping in the dining room in her bed with a baby gate in place.
Occasionally, she has trouble settling and starts whimpering/crying and sometimes barking once we've turned the lights out and are in bed and the house is quiet. Initially, I used to then sleep on a crappy little mattress on the floor on the other side of the gate and usually she then settled. But I'm not willing to keep doing this as I then have an awful, uncomfortable night's sleep. So the last couple of times when she didn't settle, we've brought her bed up and let her sleep in our room. My husband thinks it would be nice to just let her choose where she wants to sleep. My one issue is the thought of having sex with her in the room! That would be so weird! Wouldn't it? (Not that were particulalry busy in that department, but still, it's not something we would want to do without altogether!) How do those of you who share their bedrooms with their dogs handle this? I worry that if she gets used to sleeping in our room, if we shut her out while we're dtd, she will then whimper and cry to be let into the room!
I'm aware that loads of people do have a sex life AND allow their pets to sleep in their bedroom. So please enlighten me, how do you make it work when you're wanting some night time action ?

Thats when you let them out in the garden for their night time wee or give them a chew that'll keep them busy elsewhere for a while Smile

This is one of the reasons we don’t have dogs sleeping in our room. They sleep downstairs in the kitchen with the baby gate, if they are unsettled then we go down to them or tell them bed but don’t take them up with us at all. Not easy in practice though I appreciate that

Brakebackcyclebot · 27/12/2020 21:33

It's a dog. She won't care!

WisestIsShe · 27/12/2020 21:34

We just turf him out of the room for a bit. He gives us a filthy look as though he knows what we're up to and he disapproves Grin

Ruddyfedup · 27/12/2020 21:34

My pup stays curled up in her bed none the wiser! Shes not tall enough, and never will be, to get on the bed herself!

tabulahrasa · 27/12/2020 21:37

@Brakebackcyclebot

It's a dog. She won't care!
That...

Not with a cat in the room though, they look at you with that sort of sneery judgemental expression...

Mangermaid · 27/12/2020 21:44

My DH insisted that he wanted our two large dogs to sleep on our bed. There just wasn't enough room for the four of us to sleep in a double bed and I ended up balancing on the edge with no duvet. When I objected he told me to go and sleep in the spare room if I didn't like it.

I get a great night's sleep now, a whole double bed to myself and we haven't slept together since.

SimonJT · 27/12/2020 21:47

Our dog starts the night in his crate in the livingroom, so that solves the dog problem for us. The cat however often stays on the bed and glares at us, if you get too close she gives you a swipe of her claws, so now I have a bag of treats on my nightstan, so I can chuck a handful of treats across the room to keep her busy.

Lifeispassingby · 27/12/2020 21:54

@SimonJT yes to the cat!! She refuses to budge no matter what!!

MrsFluffyMuff · 27/12/2020 21:55

Can't think of anything more off-putting than having sex with a cat or dog in the room. Do they not stare at you? Or do you have to be deathly quiet Confused

I love having spontaneous sex without worrying about having to chuck the dog out the room. Good job he's quite content downstairs really!

aliasname · 27/12/2020 21:59

Dog won't notice.

Cat will watch and judge you.

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/12/2020 22:03

I don’t care and forget all about him. DP doesn’t like him in the room (although sometimes he forgets too). If my dog wakes up and pokes his head up and notices proceedings (!) we shoo him out of the room for a bit. He knows what we are up to and looks balefully at us as we shut the door on him...

Pineapplemonkey · 27/12/2020 22:31

The things my cat has seen me do, both on my own and with a third party, he’s probably traumatised. But he sleeps on the end of the bed regardless of noise or movement, no ones making him stay. I reckon if you’re either worrying what your pet is thinking or looking at said pet, you’re doing it all wrong.......

PoleToPole · 27/12/2020 22:33

It makes me squeamish too, Christ, talk about a mood killer! We just don`t have sex in the bedroom - but years of co-sleeping with the DC meant that our activities were already elsewhere.

Jokat · 27/12/2020 23:40

Well, some of these have cheered me up no end Grin and I've come to realize that I'm probably over thinking it! I shall adopt a more relaxed approach and see how that goes. Thank you all for your input!

This is why mine sleeps in the kitchen. He thinks we’re playing and tries to join in - once you’ve had a cold dog nose somewhere unexpected in medias res then you harden your heart very quickly.

Jokat · 28/12/2020 15:37

Hahaha Grin

Worriedandabitscared · 28/12/2020 15:40

We once did the deed with a cat at the bottom of the bed (didn't realise as was during the night) and I swear she gave me the shit eye all day Grin dogs don't care though, but I have a pug and wouldn't like to think where she'd end up licking so we put her in her crate downstairs while the deed is done!

GlowingOrb · 28/12/2020 15:41

Saturday night live has the solution

OliveToboogie · 28/12/2020 22:01

@MaryLennoxsScowl I totally agree! Happened to us once when the door wasn’t quite shut and the dog wandered up to see what we were playing!
