DDog came eating Royal canin puppy for medium dogs ....he is springer spaniel now 13 weeks but weighs about 10/11kgs.....but he often seems hungry...rather than upping the quantity am wondering whether to change food...before we need to order some more..

Ideally I want dry food..(,the smell if wet makes me gag)....I think and also not spend a fortune but happy to spend a bit more..
What do people recommend?

allaboutdogfood.co.uk is a good site to show the differences in price and quality of different foods and brands. Often the better quality (higher named meat/fish quantity) seems dearer but you need to feed less so if you put in the dogs weight etc it will give you a price per day which helps compare.

BiteyShark · 27/12/2020 15:53

Sorry I didn't give you any recommendations.

We switched to wet food as it was better for his stomach but I have used Millieswolfheart in the past which has lots of different dry flavours and can be used from puppy to senior as it's high protein as well as a complete food.

Our dog was on Royal Canin for ages and kept getting tummy upsets. Like every few weeks. Was recommended Millie’s Wolfheart earlier this year and he hasn’t had a single day of upset tummy since. It’s not cheap but neither is Royal Canin - and yes because it’s so much meat content you give lighter portions.

Eden it really is worth the price.

Snackz · 27/12/2020 17:21

We give ours Wainwrights from Pets at Home Smile

Sazlock · 27/12/2020 17:33

We moved from Royal Canin which breeder had him on, to Nature’s Instinct puppy dry food. Our pup is much calmer and more satisfied with his food. I also recommend the all about dog food website as it gives lots of helpful info about the quality of dog foods.

They both look good much more the sort of ingredients i was thinking of! think I will give them a call to work out which one... not massively dearer than canin either ...thanks

Dog food comparison websites can be helpful to get an overview of different brands and foods on offer, and can be very helpful to search if your dog has allergies or specific requirements, but do be wary when looking at their ratings as there are a lot of downsides to the way they rate dog food.

Using the ingredients list is not a foolproof method. This short article details why if you`re interested:

vetnutrition.tufts.edu/2016/06/why-you-shouldnt-judge-a-pet-food-by-its-ingredient-list/

I have my working dog on plain old Pedigree Chum. After many years of searching and trying different foods (including raw and homemade) it is the only one I have ever found that he will actually eat, rather than pick at and wander off and leave it permanently if there is anything even minutely more interesting going on.

Keeping his weight up has been the bane of both mine and our vet`s lives, together we have tried everything (and she is brilliant), but finally Pedigree Chum keeps his weight up to a decent level, and our vet has never been happier with his health.

That is something I learnt with my non food orientated fosters, the best dog food is the one they will or can actually eat, when you find it, sometimes its like looking for a needle in a haystack. Of course if your dog loves food that opens up many more possibilities! Grin

Most importantly - do discuss with your vet, I am not in the UK, but there is concern here about grain free dog foods.
The FDA opened an investigation in 2018 to examine a potential link between grain free diets and a heart condition (canine dilated cardiomyopathy), there is nowhere near enough research at the minute, but it is a concern.

We use Burns mini chicken puppy. Excellent food, we do feed about 30% more than it say... she is slim and very active. Still fed 4x a day as a small dog and having a growth spurt.

Used the Brurns for the last two years Breeder recommended it, She has part pouch of wet the dry mixed in the way doesn't stink like other dog foods.

PugInTheHouse · 29/12/2020 11:19

I am finding the whole food situation a bit stressful. We have a 13 week old pug and he always seems hungry. He is 3.3kg and has no excess fat on him at all.

He is on Wainwrights dry food, he has 120g a day which is the recommended amount according to their packaging. I have had to spread over 4 feeds as he is so hungry in between otherwise. I reckon I could feed him more though. It may just be due to his breed being greedy though.
