Advice please on choosing a breed

I have had dogs before and would like one again but need help choosing a suitable breed?
Previously I've had rescued/rehomed labrador crosses (crossed with goodness knows what!).
I don't want to do that this time as I want a puppy - I have small children and want them to learn to train, work with and look after the dog which I think would be best with a known breed puppy.
My children are aged 4 to 10 and are used to treating family and friends' dogs appropriately.

I work part time, my husband works from home, we have a garden, and easy access to dog walking paths. We plan to crate train and maybe do agility.

Anyway - so a smallish - medium sized dog with not too shedding hair, and good for a small family who walk a lot! One that would be happy to snooze under a desk most of the day, and play with the kids without toy/food guarding.

Any suggestions? Smile

@MabelMoo23, I know a few vizslas. Lovely dogs, energetic, certainly prone to be clingy, very affectionate.

If you go down that route, be aware that some are still bred for work and will be serious dogs needing a lot of training and owner input. A pedigree full of field trial champions (FTCh) is likely to produce very amped puppies.

Ah it is a shame you're not feeling the staffie.

I'm on my 3rd now. Last one we lost at 16 earlier this year.
Current pup is 8 months.
Absolutely fantastic with children. All 3 of them have been. They're daft as brushes, easily trained love a good ramble or a trot around the block.
And sleeping Grin

And just to add
We got our first staffie 17 years ago when we were considering starting a family.
I went to the vet with our pet rabbit and asked for their advice as I was going to get a lab.
His advice was staffie or king Charles.
Not a breed I had considered but so glad I did.

Not for the OP more for the pp who mentioned the sensationalist headlines.

Beddy whippet!

Lazy and chilled and all the other good points of a lurcher/sight hound. but less anxious than a whippet, smaller than a grey hound and cuddlier due to scruffiness
