Rehomed dog up all night

Hi would love some reassurance we're doing the right thing.
We rehomed a gorgeous beagle male about 8.5/9years old on Friday. He's been living with an elderly friend who was struggling to cope.
We're expecting lots of night time barking and howling for about a week, but I'm already shattered! Fri night husband came down to sleep with him around midnight as he sounded so pitiful (dog, not husband!), yesterday night we ignored him and he whined/ howled/ barked 11.30, 3.00, 5.00 for about 30mins each time, last night on and off all night. I got up at 5am about 5 mins after he quietened down so that he wouldn't start again and husband could sleep before work.
We got a pheromone calming plugin thingy yesterday, maybe if takes a while to work 🤔

Oh poor boy. He must be missing his old house/owner.
Can you get something that smells of her for him to sleep with for a bit? Or something that smells of you, my dog sleeps much better with something I've recently worn near his crate at night

I would sleep downstairs with him
My sister's dog always refused to be left alone at night, barking and whining, when she stayed a few nights, and in the end we used to let her in our room in her dog basket. Labrador. Who always slept in my sister's kitchen without trouble. She isn't used to your house yet.

Peeing on floor is what happens when they aren't fast asleep.

Oh, and if you're on Facebook, search for Kellie Wynn - The Beagle Lady. She'll be able to give you plenty of pointers!

Thanks everyone Smile we have him a good long walk and spent time starting to train him today. He's been really chilled out and not followed me as much. We got back not long ago and he's dragged his blanket over to me and sleeping at my feet with it Grin
We'll take him out at 10.30 and then settle him with a snack toy and see how he gets on. If he's really distressed I'll pop down and sleep with him or move him upstairs sounds like a plan!

Thanks again xx

Our lovely rescue cried when we put her to bed on her first night with us and I capitulated immediately and brought her up to our room. It absolutely wasn’t the plan - our dogs have always slept in the kitchen and I was really anti dogs in the bedroom. But I can no longer function without sleep so up she came. She has been totally fine since that moment. The first night she checked where I was five or six times ... a wet snuffly nose shoved into my face as I slept, the second night she checked once or twice, and the 18 months since, she has slept all night in her basket. Never any crying. Rescue dogs, by definition, have had trauma and upset to some degree, and it’s understandable they struggle with night time separation. I guess we could have sleep trained her but I’m not sure whether that would have been any “better” than what we have now. Good luck! Whatever you decide to do x

Had a great night! He only woke up twice, around 1pm when he settled himself within a few minutes and 3am when DH went down he just calmly sat and ignored him and he went straight back to sleep. No mess or accidents, went down this morning at 7 and he was there with a big smile and waggy tail Grin

Awww how wonderful; this made me teary! Bless him, it’s such a big upheaval. I’m so glad he’s settling in.

vanillandhoney · 22/12/2020 08:30

That's awesome! Well done Grin

That's lovely news - and there is nothing like a waggy tail to make it all worth while!
