Did your male dog stop house marking after neutering?

Posted in a diff thread however just curious!

Me and DH about to get our 2x 10month old pups neutered after Christmas. We didn’t think the marking was a problem until recently so they’ve been doing it about a month now. We restarted toilet training thinking it was a regression but now realised it’s territorial marking.

Want to hear some success stories really! We clean daily with the enzymatic cleaner and persist with outdoor training. They only mark inside during the night when we sleep and aren’t left downstairs for longer than 7 1/2 hours so a standard night! It’s just when it happens

Did your dogs stop after neutering?

The night is just when it happens* before the marking started they were trained to go outside only

We’ve noticed the marking started and so did increased humping so we believe they’re coming into puberty

I had my dog neutered at 8months but he was toilet trained so never really marked inside anyway.
He still marks outside but not as much as entire dogs do.

nextdoorshush · 19/12/2020 13:47

can you crate overnight? we had to do that to stop ours, don't think the neutering has made a difference as he's as obsessively doing it outside as always.

doubledogmamma · 19/12/2020 13:49

@nextdoorshush we may consider this! We couldn’t keep the crate out all day as we don’t realy have the space, of a night we could plonk it where they sleep but if we left it out in the day it’d take a lot of space

I also heard we’d need 2 and that you shouldn’t crate them together!

If the neutering doesn’t fully stop it I think this will be our only option however the neutering has a double ended purpose (one of mine is a bit angry and we heard it helps with temper)

Probably marking because you have two of them. Can you separate them at night? Very rare to just scent mark at night tbh.

Neutering will not help wth temper it can make things much worse.

Try chemical neuturing first to see if it helps

Notapheasantplucker · 19/12/2020 14:49

I would strongly advise against crating them together. That could go really wrong one day.
Sorry not answered your post, that just stood out to me.

doubledogmamma · 19/12/2020 15:04

@Notapheasantplucker hi sorry didn’t clarify on my comment , I meant we’d definitely crate separately! As they do play fight

Would never leave them enclosed together

OP posts:
doubledogmamma · 19/12/2020 15:06

@PollyRoulson due to the layout of our house we couldn’t really seperate them unless we brought one up with us which we’ll never allow (due to the prospect of having kids in the future etc)

Our vet said that it would indeed help with marking and temper. They only mark of a night as it’s the longest time they get alone! Me and DH are still WFH which doesn’t help but a few weeks ago they’d do it if we simply turned our backs. Luckily this has stopped but yeah when we leave them down for a prolonged period it happens

nextdoorshush · 19/12/2020 15:27

only just noticed they are both the same age. were they littermates that you got at the same time?

doubledogmamma · 19/12/2020 15:58

@nextdoorshush yep both from the same litter!

OP posts:
vanillandhoney · 19/12/2020 17:52

This could be part of your problem - have you read up on littermate syndrome?

PollyRoulson · 19/12/2020 18:30

Your vet is incorrect to say neutering will help with temper - do some research and you will see this for yourself

The ONLY behaviour neutering has been scientifically proven to change is scent marking BUT havivng two dogs together will complicate this a lot

doubledogmamma · 19/12/2020 19:03

@vanillandhoney haven’t heard about this but will look it up definitely

When I say one has a bit of a temper, he’s loud and barks. I’ve never seen him attack another dog or even attempt it

OP posts:
doubledogmamma · 19/12/2020 19:05

@PollyRoulson I am doing research. A lot says it can decrease any temper and I also trust a vet who is a professional and has performed this procedure more times than I could count.

I will continue researching but general consensus shows it can help with temper. Studding him out (which we planned to do) can increase temper and make them more territorial

OP posts:
PollyRoulson · 19/12/2020 20:12

Can you link to the articles that are saying castration will decrease temper please?

"Studding him out" will not increase temper or make them more territorial what are you reading or where are you getting you information from?

Wolfiefan · 19/12/2020 20:17

Why on earth stud him out? That can really change behaviour.
You may need to end up rehoming one. No decent breeder would have let you have two brothers from one litter. They need to be walked and trained etc separately.

Why on earth are you considering studding him out?

He clearly has behavioural issues - why on earth would you want to pass those genes on?

doubledogmamma · 19/12/2020 20:39

I was not studding him out after knowing he had issues. When we first got them we thought when they were older we could - we won’t now

Also I’m repeating what my vet has said. They are the professional so if they’re wrong take it up with them. I am not a vet at all. This thread wasn’t about me referencing my sources

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 19/12/2020 20:41

So you’ll separate them then?
Neutering won’t cure aggression.

nextdoorshush · 19/12/2020 20:43

The getting 2 puppies from the same breeder does raise concerns. that is likely linked to most of your problem here and worryingly this might increase a lot as the dogs mature.
Aside from the fact studding a dog who has issues is a no-go as you are passing on problems, it sounds like he has also come from an irresponsible breeder (as no 1 allows two puppies to go to a home if they know what they're doing) in the first place, and even more crazy to be both male so it doesn't sound well placed to be studded for any reason.
I'd get advice from a behaviourist first and suspect you will end up needing to neuter both dogs fairly quickly if you plan on keeping them.

nextdoorshush · 19/12/2020 20:48

I know some people are saying neutering won't cure aggression, but every now and again dogs have a few cross words with my dog -guaranteed every time the dog in question hasn't been neutered. I now make sure they don't even get to stiff to say hi now if I can tell they're not " done" as it always ends in a bit of an argument.
now my dog loves other neutered dogs so no idea who "starts" it.. but it happens.

Tanfastic · 19/12/2020 21:05

I had my dog neutered last year when he was thirteen (due to a bottom tumour). Prior to that he would cock his leg up every single lamppost, mark in my mum's house if she looked after him and try and lick and mount her dog all the bloody time, it was horrendous. That wasn't the reason we got him done though (see above).

However....a few weeks after we did it all stopped. Kind of wished we'd had him done years ago. He's 14.5 now.

Ken1976 · 19/12/2020 21:21

Our dog drove my daughter mad by peeing on her full length curtains . I booked him in at the vets to be spayed, and a few days later no more pee indoors. It worked great !

Sitdowncupoftea · 20/12/2020 15:45

I have more than one dog. I always nueter none of my dogs have ever marked in the house.
