How long does your 5 month old puppy sleep during the day? Do they take themselves for a nap or do you put them in their crate/bed for one? Do you have set times too? Xmas Smile

Mine wake around 6ish for a wee and some food (they sleep in their crate overnight) and then we go back to be for a snuggle till 9am.

We then go for a walk/run and they sleep again around 11ish for an hour, they normally take themselves in to their crate or on their bed.

If they don’t nap they get bitey and fight so I’ll pop one up on the chair with me until the other one falls asleep.

Then it’s lunch time and another walk and they sleep again around 3ish - I take up all their toys and generally ignore them until they crash.

Dinner is around 5.30pm and another walk around the block before we snuggle up on the sofa for the evening with bouts of running around doing zoomies and being a pair of dick heads before bed time at 11pm.

They are just over 5 months now.

@TimeToCloseTheDoor Sounds about the same for mine! Though we are usually in bed for 9:30 so if we're up past that time, he's furious with us Xmas Grin

Can I ask, do you let yours out in the garden by themselves? Unsure the 'right age and not sure if I'm too cautious Smile

We let ours out unsupervised from three months, but our garden is super secure - the worst he could do was dig in the dirt.

He slept a lot during the day at that age but was still getting up most nights for a wee. I'd say he slept around 18 hours out of 24.

our pup is up at 7, we let him out for a wee then take him for a walk around 730/8

we dawdle around as we come back via the high street so normally back by 810

he then has breakfast and mucks around for a bit and then settles down back to sleep around 9ish

if he's not disturbed, he sleeps till 10/11, roams around for a bit, has lunch at 12 then usually settles down back to sleep

we walk him again any time between 2 and 4pm (when he's awake)

dinner at 5pm and then he mucks around till about 7 and then starts settling down for the evening. He's usually fast asleep by 8/830pm. We take him out for a wee when we go to bed around 10.

we do let him out in the garden by himself - I am more cautious about this than dp. I like to sit in the kitchen so we can see the garden when he's out in it but dp feels more relaxed about it. I still think he's a baby and needs keeping an eye on (the garden is large so there's a lot of trouble he could get in to!). He doesn't have a crate so flops down to sleep where he wants though he does have a bed and if every thing is a bit too much, he will take himself to his bed to have a rest.

he only poos on his walks so we definitely need to take him twice a day (once in the morning, once in the afternoon). If he's looking a bit perky, we'll take him out around 7pm before he settles down if it looks like he needs another poo!

mine is about 4.5 months. She's up when I get up - 7-8, dozes from 9-10.30, then walk/play til about 1, another nap til 2.15 or so, then school run, up and active til about 4.30, another nap til 6, up til about 8, more naps, actually really mostly asleep and up for a pee at about 10/11, then asleep. I kind of ignore her when it's time for her to nap, occasionally will take her and put her to bed when she's forgotten how to go to sleep.

She does go out by herself into garden, which is kind of sort of secure. She's not worked out where the gaps in the fence are and is not so far inclined to run off/escape.

ArabellaScott · 17/12/2020 20:37

Oh, she doesn't have a crate, she just uses whichever sofa/chair is closest to me.

Thankyou for all your wonderful advice Smile

We started off with a crate in the kitchen but left the crate door open so he could have free roam. He's a destructive chewer so we made the decision to properly crate him with the door shut and wish we'd done it from the start! He's so chilled in there and occasionally takes himself off in there too Smile

As for the garden, DH let's him have free roam but I'm so cautious about it!
