The doghouse

If you're worried about your pet's health, please speak to a vet or qualified professional.

How do you clean your dog's teeth? And what's the easiest way of doing it for a forgetful rather busy household?

Just that really

We have been pretty hopeless. Occasional dental chews but never quite convinced they work, occasional teeth brushing... but determined to do better and most importantly be a bit consistent.

Is there an easy product?

Or a natural toothpaste for brushing?

We're keen to keep it healthy - and easy!

My ddogs have raw veg snacks most days. Teeth brushed on a Saturday!!
They don't have chews as Husky swallows not chews them!
Raw whole fat carrots for her or a raw cabbage heart!! Her teeth are still sparkly at 7!!
Also recently started plaque off for Lurchers.. Seems to be working!

My dogs have a raw marrowbone or knuckle bone fresh from the butcher once a week. Keeps their teeth sparkly and healthy. They are nearly 11, and teeth are in great condition. Never once brushed my spaniels teeth. It’s great mental stimulation too.

Regular ostrich bones, ostrich tendon chews, buffalo horn and a nightly dentastick (for what they are worth!) at bedtime.

I haven't tried raw cabbage - intriguing and sounds rather messy and going to give it a go

Somehow he has never got into carrots... not sure why!

DH has the job every day after BiteyDog has had his dinner of attempting to brush his teeth. Although it doesn't appear to be a very thorough clean (despite 4 years of doing this BiteyDog isn't keen) we know it makes a difference as his breath stinks if he forgets to do it.

Ah... so the fact our dog's breath never stinks must be a good sign!! Occasional slightly doggy smell but never unpleasant .... unlike husbands!! Oops...

I clean my dog's teeth with dog toothbrush (think I bought it online) and dog toothpaste (enzymatic one for dogs - I got it from VioVet but lots of pet company websites sell it). I have a very obliging dog - I adopted her as a four-year-old from a rescue. From the off, I got her used to me opening her mouth and looking at her teeth. She wriggled a bit at first but she now puts up with it. Pretty soon, she tolerated me brushing her teeth. Mostly, I only get to brush the outer side of the teeth - would love to do inside too as we do with our own teeth. I do it about once a week and she has dental chews every day as well. I let her lick the toothbrush afterwards.

yep i'd use carrots or a broccoli stalk - all my dogs have loved those things and keeps them busy as well! (for 5 minutes)

MMmm... goign to try a brocolli stalk - not tried that yet!
