What crate for a Golden Retriever puppy

We are thrilled to be getting our GR puppy at last. He is coming to live with us in a week.

We are going to crate train him, although my thought is that we will crate train him as a puppy, and then possibly move him out of the crate as an older dog.

We will get crate covers (cheap ones), without necessarily putting them down at the front, but to make the crate feel like a cosy den.

But I'm really struggling to now which crate to buy and where. I just looked on mumsnet and found recommendations for amazon basics, but I can't find them on amazon. I think I would have gotten the Ellie Bo, but they aren't in stock.

Knowing that pupster is going to be big quickly, I was thinking of getting full-size (42 inch) and getting a divider. But I'm just not sure which type to get, nor how much to spend. If anyone has recommendations, please please let me know. It is getting very close to our puppies arrival. Thanks!

(and if you have any other crucial puppy tips, please do share!)

So hard to say without seeing him....or knowing his name....

He is a confident little bundle of golden gorgeousness. He bounces around, waggles his whole back half when his tail wags. At six weeks, he is a little bit chewy, he does very cute bouncy runs, and is neither massively bigger, and certainly isn't the smallest of his litter-mates. His mum and grandma are incredibly friendly, lovely dogs, and we are hoping he will be like her. He doesn't seem particularly shy. He will sleep downstairs, but for the first week or so one of us will sleep downstairs with him.

We also gave cats, and so it is going to be a big transition, and we want to give him his spot where he can have a snuggle spot that is calm for him.

If we are getting the full-size crate, then I have assumed that we would need a divider, to keep it cozy (and to make sure that there is space for his bed but not a 'toilet' area).

We have a beagle (so medium sized dog), but we bought 2 different sized crates when we got him. We started fairly small as didn't want to overwhelm him and now at 18 months old he's in an XL crate.

We did consider a divider but I read too many horror stories of them getting stuck 😬

we have a working cocker pup . we have a metal crate but also for a fabric one (luckily second hand) for the car. we decided to put the fabric one in the room we work in during covid. she ate through the zip in minutes so i would recommend you get a metal substantial one.

good luck. we have a retriever dog niece and she grew and grew very quickly
our dog, now 8 months, still likes her crate and goes in their willingly for peace and quiet from children or cats

Oh, @April1990 I did spot that for one of the crates the divider had been discontinued, which made me a little worried about how 'safe' it was.

@kathryn77 I looked at the fabric ones. They look nice and cosy, but I was worried about washing with a puppy. I'll stick to the metal variety.

I am finding it so hard to know what is best! I know he will grow really fast, and thought that the divider was the answer. Maybe I should just think about two. I'm also surprised at how few there are second-hand (although with a puppy who hasn't had his jabs, I think I'd feel more comfortable with a new one).

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants he is called Herbie. I'll try and get a photo up.

He is 6 1/2 weeks here. He'll be a bigger boy when we collect him.

Just came on to say... I didn't know crate covers were an item all on their own, but save yourself the money and just throw an old blanket or two over it.
Have you tried pets at home? they usually have a large selection of crates.

He is delightful, you must be so excited. No idea about crates, they weren’t a thing we we had our pup. Good luck.

Hi, our golden in now 11 months old & is big for breed & we've had 3 different sized crates along the way. We managed to borrow the first metal one, which was a medium size from pets at home. The next two were more like pet carriers which we bought second hand from Facebook. He is now on the XL version which is plenty big enough. The great thing about buying used is that you can recoup the money when you sell on.

Pets at Home do great crates Smile Our pup was in a medium one and HATED it! However, as he's grown so much (He's now 18 weeks), we've just gone straight for the XL crate and he loves it Xmas Smile Don't waste money on crate covers either; an old blanket or bedding will do just fine Xmas Grin

Thanks so much everyone. Pets at Home crate ordered. I'll use a blanket, and see how that goes. Hoping pupster will love it.

Crates are so much safer especially when the dog is young. Safer in the car too
