I’m so stupid! i didn’t know they were harmful. My DH is like ‘oh he’ll be fine’ but I’m panicking !!

www.purina.com/articles/dog/nutrition/can-dogs-eat-grapes

The link above shows symptoms to look for. There’s probably some logic that suggests a larger otherwise fit dog, will be fine, but a puppy, or elderly dog who already has kidney issues may need help.

Does your pet insurance company have a help line? If so call them for advice.
I know you are worried, but I have known dogs snaffle Xmas cakes and mince pies and been fine, so hopefully your doh will be too.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 13/12/2020 16:45

Keep an eye on the dog over the next 24hrs / 48hrs. I would also ring your vet first thing (or now if they're open) just to be safe. Watch out for vomiting, diarrhoea, etc. What breed is he? A chihuahua and a Great Dane will have a different reaction. Stay calm for now though Flowers I panic like hell when the dog is in the kitchen and I've got the onions out so I know it's easy to worry.

Darklane · 13/12/2020 16:48

I don’t think one grape will do much harm. We’ve had one eat the odd dropped one in the past with no ill effects.

NoSquirrels · 13/12/2020 16:49

My vet says the issue is that you cannot know if your dog will react badly to grapes or raisins - many will be fine but those that are not fine the damage will be done before you see the symptoms. If they do react it can be fatal.

It’s not like chocolate where you can watch and wait and the severity depends on how much cocoa solids can weight of dog (so a Labrador can eat more than a Chihuahua etc)

So I’m afraid I would be calling the vet ASAP who will probably advise getting them in to vomit it up.

(Boxing Day mince pie incident cost me a lot in emergency fees!)

He’s a 7 month old mini labradoodle. 11kg in weight. I feel so bad about this.

NoSquirrels is right

Many years ago, my BIL's dog stole and ate half a fruit cake that was in a cupboard (wrapped in tinfoil, which it spat out). The dog was fine and lived another healthy 9 years beyond the experience.Grin

BiscuitDrama · 13/12/2020 16:56

Do you have a full list of food they can’t eat now? Smile
Obviously remember about dried grapes in the form of sultanas and raisins. We’ve had a Sorreen incident. Blush

BiteyShark · 13/12/2020 16:56

It's not like chocolate. It doesn't go on weight, size amount etc.

It could be that your dog is ill on one, yes one grape. Or it could be that they can eat a bunch of them with no affects whatsoever.

So it comes down to whether you want to take the risk or not or phone your vet now because if they have only just ingested it they can take action to minimise the risk.

Trying to get through to the vet now

This is such dangerous advice. I know you mean well but people could take you at your word and end up with a very unwell dog. By the time they show symptoms, it's almost too late and they need to be at the vets. The sooner they're seen, the better.

Grapes are not like chocolate where there is, to some extent, a "safe" amount for dogs. Some dogs can eat 50 grapes and be fine, others will get very sick from just one or two.

OP, get your dog to the emergency vet. Depending on how long ago it was, they'll be given charcoal to make themselves sick. If it was too long ago, they may be kept in for observation.

billybagpuss · 13/12/2020 17:52

Sorry hope you’re able to get to the vet, billypup had one and they were adamant she had to go immediately. Very expensive grape

nextdoorshush · 13/12/2020 18:12

our emergency vet wanted our dog in for eating just ONE raisin, made our poor dog vomit until they were sure they had found it..

Bejazzled · 13/12/2020 18:57

Update. They gave the wee soul an emetic and are keeping him in overnight for blood tests and fluids.
All for a stupid grape Shock
Thankfully it’ll be covered by the insurance though ££££

I’m shattered, this is like having a sick child over again.

So glad you got treatment. It seems excessive but if yours was one of those dogs that is affected by grapes then leaving it could be catastrophic so you did the right thing.

I love grapes but since having my dog I no longer buy them and raisins are kept in lockable Tupperware to avoid any accidental ingestion and I am very careful when using them because I know if he did eat one it would mean an emergency vet run.

Fingers crossed your dog is ok and comes home tomorrow Thanks

vanillandhoney · 13/12/2020 19:12

You did the right thing. It's expensive but the alternative is so much worse.

polkadotpjs · 13/12/2020 19:14

You did the right thing. I'm sure pup will be ok now

Ah, well done. Hope pup is OK tomorrow. Flowers

You DO feel like an idiot for letting them eat something they shouldn’t, and then you feel an idiot all over again when other people say their dog was absolutely fine and make you feel like it’s an over-reaction. But my vet said they’d rather make 100 dogs sick than lose one to avoidable kidney failure as it’s a horrid thing to see when it’s hard to treat by that point. (And if it makes you feel any better at all, same vet said they only found out in training that grapes were toxics and had been feeding them to their family dog for years with no ill effects, so you’re certainly not the first to not realise!)

That’s so true, when I was growing up i remember our dogs would get basically whatever we were having as a treat - chocolate, fruit cake - anything! My friend was saying how she and her husband used to freeze grapes and let their pup chase them across the floor and eat them - she was horrified that this could have been serious. can’t wait to get him home tomorrow for a hug.
