When MarvellousDog was about 6/7 months old he got his first ear infection. It was really really severe. We worked with the vet to treat it, and one of the treatments clearly made it sting as from that point on he would go absolutely mental if I tried to but drops anywhere near his ear.

We've since established that he has allergies, both food related and environmental. So, while he is receiving ongoing treatment, he often gets itchy skin and ears.

The vet suggested that we clean his ears regularly to help prevent infection as much as possible but the thought of trying to treat his ears at home daily almost brought me to tears as it was so upsetting and stressful.

If you had told me a year ago when he was violently fighting me not to go near his ears, that today I would be able to sit down, pop in his drops, and then get on with no stress to either of us, I would have been amazed. It's been months and months of gradual, slow, work with lots of praise and reward for him, and it has really paid off.

We have worked so so hard to get to this point and now he doesn't even flinch. To the point that if he does react, I know he is getting sore and get him straight to the vet as it's a sign of infection pain.

No question here really, I just wanted to share with people who may understand what an achievement this is for me, and to say that it is possible!

That's wonderful! It's so hard to keep going sometimes with training but it's always reassuring to hear success stories like yours which prove you can turn things around.

Fantastic well done you!

Your dog is a lucky dog to have an ower willing to put in the work to make their life easier Smile

Well done both of you.
We have the same trouble with one of ours, vet says he has allergies but hasn't done test to find out what, did you have extra tests at your vet to find out what or did you have to go somewhere else. X

MsMarvellous · 13/12/2020 09:47

@copperoliverwe had bloods done at the vet and they got the results back from the lab they use. Took a couple of weeks and it's covered by insurance. As is the immunotherapy treatment that he's having. Because he's so allergic to environment (grasses and trees) we decided it was worthwhile trying the treatment.

He's on a grain free raw diet but still flares up in skin and ears. At a guess he manages to occasionally forage stuff he shouldn't eat, food stuff seems to trigger the ears, and then his skin seems to be triggered by environment.

Being able to treat him properly now is just worth all the effort.

Fantastic, well done.

It's such a wonderful feeling with things like this when they click into place.

Lucky dog to have an owner who was willing to keep trying until you got on top of this.

Well done! Same thing happened with us, my dog keeps getting alternate sore ears but was nasty if I tried to touch them, obviously he was in pain but also is like this anyway funny about me touching certain areas on him.. I resorted to muzzling him in the summer to give them a good clean and was popping drops in when he was asleep! He's got so much better he let's me do it now no problem most of the time! I think he does know I'm trying to help now but if I thought he might snap I won't hesitate to use the muzzle again!

copperoliver · 13/12/2020 20:31

@MsMarvellous Thank you for replying that's really helpful. X

That’s brilliant. Well done. My older hound had awful ear problems. Hers seem to be diet. If we avoid chicken and beef we can manage it. She used to battle about ear cleaning. Now she will come towards me when I get the bottle out and offer me an ear! Grin

Mydogsnotfat · 13/12/2020 21:14

Just in case you haven’t heard of it, there’s an old fashioned powder called Thornit that is wonderful for sore or whiffy ears

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2020 21:32

@Mydogsnotfat tried that. Didn’t help. I think it’s good for mites though.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 13/12/2020 21:37

Fabulous achievement OP.
