VERY occasional marking

What would cause a long time housebroken dog to mark?

5 year old male, housebroken since 3 months old, neutered at 11 mo (because he was starting to mark the house), gets two walks a day and some off leash time, lots of potty breaks because we're at home and have a garden. No behaviour issues except doesn't like grooming very much...

A few days ago he walked in my bedroom and let out a small wee. Not a proper one, like he was desperate for a pee. Kind of marking sprinkle. He did do this in the living room carpet about 6mo ago (although I didn't witness this, but found the lovely arc shape stain!!)

We did get him a female (spayed) companion about a year ago...is he marking because of her? Or does everyone's male do this once in a while?

Marking is not peeing, as such, so isn't normally a reflection on the state of toilet training.

Lots of things trigger marking in male dogs, such as an usual smell. The fact that is is occasional suggests it's not really an issue with training at all.

Personally, I'd mark this one down to one of the downsides of having a male dog. My own will, very occasionally, do this inside the house - or square up in preparation before I interupt him.

Okay, so it's not just him then.

We had very occasional pees inside the house up to age 1 but I think they were the result of stressful experiences. Nothing at all since then which would be 3 years so not sure how common it is for male dogs.

It may well be linked to how much the dog marks anyway. Mine is intact and marks every few mins outdoors, so the indoor attempts are, perhaps, more likely in him than a neutered dog who rarely marks anywhere.

saint I kind of thought that? He does like to mark a lot outside on his walks. When he had puberty he wanted to mark EVERY tree.

If he had his way now it would be every 5 trees!!

Sigh...it was just odd lying in bed and hearing it going 'did I actually hear what I think I heard?' lol
