Daughter dropped our dog

We have had a youngish rescue dog for around 6 months. He’s settled in well. He quite likes being picked up and carried or he seems too. Unfortunately last night he wriggled and DD dropped him! She’s a teen so was a bit of a drop. He seems physically fine but has been sulking in bed since then.

He’s eating etc and went out for a walk but he just seems sad. I am scared we broke his trust - albeit accidentally.

What can I do? Do you think he’ll come around? And yes, no more picking up.

He will come round. Is he playbor food orientated? Or both? Whatever it is lots of it and he will be OK. We accidentally shut our rescue dog in a room when we went out (his biggest fear is being trapped) he made us feel guilty for a week and then got over it. As long as they have love and understanding they will be fine.

Ok thanks! We feel awful. Will give him lots of treats.

Tim, to rebuild trust. And NO picking up.

Boltonb · 08/12/2020 12:54

Time, not Tim 😂

He'll be fine I'm sure, he may just be a bit frightened or shocked about what happened.

But yes, like you said, please stop picking him up. Most dogs don't like it and it's really not necessary in most cases.

Take him to the vet and get him checked over. He may have hurt his back in the fall

Frenchdressing · 08/12/2020 13:27

Thanks. Think he’s perking up a bit now.

One of my dogs fell down the stairs years ago. He took to his bed for the day but later when we went for a walk seemed ok so I did nothing about it. He was never quite the same though. He used to jump on his hind legs and stopped doing that.

It turned out he had put a disc out which calcified. His back became stiff and walking difficult which got worse and worse and in the end he was paralysed and had to be put to sleep.
Get your doggie checked over after a fall like that. Just to be sure

Frenchdressing · 08/12/2020 13:37

Ok thanks.

There is no reason to pick up a dog. There is a difference between the dog sitting beside/on you and a human carrying a dog.
Get him check to make sure nothing is damaged, let him rest and have space and then instill in everyone in the house that you don't pick up and carry a dog.

ScalpHelp · 08/12/2020 16:22

Why is she picking him up and carrying him to begin with though? I know she’s a teen but you still need to teach her to be kind to animals, they don’t necessarily get reciprocal enjoyment from things like this.

ScalpHelp · 08/12/2020 16:28

Also I do agree with taking him to the vet as a precaution as his reduced activity could be a sign he’s in pain. I doubt the dog is “sad” or “sulking” in terms of being emotional/holding a grudge etc, that’s just personification and not dog behaviour.

Frenchdressing · 08/12/2020 16:45

Our dog seems fine now I’m pleased to say but is at the vets next week anyway so will get him checked.

Stop picking up your dog, no need for it

Alexandernevermind · 08/12/2020 16:50

Get him to the vet urgently if he is quiet - a client lost her dog this way. He needs checking over to make sure there is no damage.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 08/12/2020 17:02

Take him to a vet now, he was dropped.

Please don't wait a week. Get him in ASAP. He could have injured his back in the fall.
GameSetMatch · 08/12/2020 17:23

Dogs are amazing at hiding pain, they won’t show pain if they can help it as it’s inbred in them that the weakest dog will be picked off and could be attacked. Please see the vet if he looks sad and not his usual self.
