Can anyone recommend anything suitable for my bright but aging collie? She's not getting as much stimulation these days, so looking for suggestions to occupy her brain.

We started my old boy off on a snuffle mat, then when he got the hang of that bought a kong wobbler and 6 months on he’s doing a bit of scent work like hiding treats under yoghurt pots and making parcels out of toilet roll inners for him to find in the house. I’ve bought him this brain training puzzles Christmas from a recommendation. It’s double sided so two for the price of one.

Doing the brain games is helping him in terms of brain stimulation, but also his arthritis, as he has to move and stretch to get the treats out.

Have a look at the Nina Ottosson puzzles. There are three or possibly four ability levels and if you look them up on Amazon, it will come up with a variety of other brands and puzzles as suggestions as well.

I made a snuffle rug myself for my boy, got a rubber sink mat and a £3 fleece blanket from the range. Took a few hours but kept me occupied haha.
A kong is also a great idea!

We have a super bright collie and we put a treat in a tea towel and then put a knot in it so she has to undo the knot to get to it. She can undo it in seconds now, but it kept her busy for a little while Smile

@splishsplashsploosh we did that for our labrador, she just ate through the tea towel to get to the treat!

We put treats in newspaper, egg boxes and toilet rolls, pad out with empty newspaper and put in a big box. Keeps her occupied.

Lickamat covered in a smear of Pate is my collies fave. She's 17 and still very bright but her teeth are awful now so kongs etc no longer work for her. This was initially for distraction from fireworks but now she's deaf they don't bother her, but she does get bored and lonely in her own wee world I think. She'll happily spend hours, or do a bit then come back to it at it.

We also got a Doggy tornado toy off amazon which has slots for treats but they need to nudge different levels with their nose to get to each bit. This also keeps her occupied and you can add bits to make it harder once they've got the hang of it.

We also keep an amazon box with their overzealous brown paper in every now and then, put one treat in and get her to find it amongst the paper.

@cyclingwife That made me smile!

cyclingwife · 10/12/2020 20:51

@splishsplashsploosh luckily it was an old tea towel Grin . Now we use empty loo rolls, egg boxes and delivery boxes which are fine to be shredded.

We make him wait in the kitchen and hide treats around the house, just the living room when we started but every room now and he heads off to sniff them out.

We got ours the buster activity mat.

It's brilliant. It has levels 1-3. You can add bits to it too. I like how you can change the activities to prevent boredom.
It's not cheap but is very good quality.
