Ear haematoma

My lovely boy had a full syringe's worth of blood drained from his ear flap yesterday, and I was told to press it regularly throughout the afternoon and evening to keep it from refilling again.

Despite my best efforts, it's refilling (although much less than before).

He can't have surgery to fix it because of a heart condition – has anyone got any tips on what else I can do to take care of it?

I'm going to check with the vet tomorrow and see if they need to drain it again, but it feels a bit like it might become an ongoing cycle...

Could you have it redrained and then bandage it up on top of his head for a while . Our dog has a slight clotting issue and when he nicked his ear flap on a rose bush that’s what our vet did . Hope he feels better soon .

Hi, ask the vet if they can fit a tube into the haematoma , at the practice i work at we use them each time a dog with this problem is presented .
A tiny incision is quickly made into the swelling , its then drained and the tube (stent) is pushed in ,(if you google haematoma tube images you will see what i mean .) there is a little screw top attached which you can remove to allow drainage , its messy and the vet may say put screw back on sometimes.
Often if the dog is tolerant we can do this without anaesthetic , sometimes even without sedation too , its quite a quick procedure and not too painful really ,vet may put a little local anaesthetic around site before incision .
