Rescue Dog Insurance

Is insurance for a rescue dog more expensive as you don't have a full history of your dog

We had our rescue for 7 years before he passed away. But I can't say I noticed any difference in the cost of his insurance. And we didn't even know his exact age! We were told between 5-7 but I think he was nearer 3 - 4 when we got him. We started off with a really expensive policy which looked like it covered everything. I think it was around £50 a month (10 years ago, medium sized dog, staffy). Until we tried to claim for dental care and realised it wasn't covered 🙄 then we cut it back to the basics (more for public liability insurance, I think that's what it's called) and put the extra we were saving into our savings account.

Hi no it isn't. You give them as much background as you have and tell the insurance company to contact the recue for the background info they have. I have a big dog and pay £25 a month for my rescue.

I wouldn't think being a rescue rather than owned from pup would make a difference as premiums calculated by info given on the quote so breed, age, sex, neutered, home address etc and then any known vet history would come under pre-existing conditions to be excluded from cover.
Rescue's usually do a vet check so should've told you at adoption if there's any health issues. I wouldn't go digging if don't need to as something relatively minor could end up expensive with major exclusion given they group conditions. Some insurers do appear to be trying to get more background history but if it doesn't exist or can't access I.e gdpr not much can do.

Only one of my rescue dogs didn't have a known date of birth so just took lower age of vet estimate & used date rescue got her, you could use adoption date.

Many insurance policies don't cover dentals unless it relates to an accident. I know Petplan may, if you have it noted on the check up the condition of teeth.

No - if a mixed breed, it’ll be cheaper Wink

My first claim with Petplan for my rescue dog was delayed while they looked into background (they'd been happily taking premiums before that), but they paid up. He's on permanent treatment for an incurable condition now, but the premiums haven't gone up more than you'd expect with age. I'd always self-insured before, and always had rescue dogs anyway, but for the level of cover I don't find the price unreasonable.
