Walking dog in the rain

Hello,
Looking for a some advice on walking dog in the rain. I recently started looking after a dog couple of days a week. He is an older dog but not the most obedient/well trained.
He gets 2 decent walks daily when he is with us.
When I was getting ready to take him out as usual, he was quite keen and eager to get out.
Obviously he didn't realise it was raining (owner did tell me he was ok with rain/snow)
When we were on the pavement near a busy road, he started getting upset by the sound of cars on wet roads.
Started to try to leap into the road and lunge on the cars.
This happened several times and I had to hold hard to keep him on the pavement.
I still carried on with the walk though a much shorter one today.
I noticed he didn't sniff his usual and just kept pulling along.
We came home and he was mega hyper running around, barking and it took a few minutes to calm him down.
I shouldn't have walked him today should I? Should have turned around and brought him home the first time?

Thanks!
X

I don't think you did anything wrong. Lots of dogs don't necessarily love the rain, it's just a matter of finding a scenario that works for them :)

If he didn't like the wet roads, could you try popping him in the car next time and going somewhere quieter? Also, if he's an older dog, wet and cold weather could mean he has sore joints - does he wear a coat?

Thank you @vanillandhoney! I'll drive to a quieter road next time it rains.
He is 7 years old (Jack Tzu). No coat here and I suspect he hasn't ever had one.

DDog loathes the rain. I try and wait for a dry spell or less wet spell.

Sounds like he’s a bit fear reactive of the noise of the wet tires maybe, slow exposure and positive reinforcement should help as it can’t be practical to not walk / drive him around everywhere in the winter .

Lots of dogs are sensitive to the noise - their ears are far more sensitive than ours, plus they're closer to the ground Grin

I walk a reactive dog that doesn't like roads/traffic, I just take him somewhere quieter - it's less stressful for him that way!

@JoeCalFuckingZaghe I did think it could be him reacting to the noise of the tyre. He recently started having an issue with wind screen wipers going off when inside the car as well.
I am very new to this and have been reading up on positive reinforcement. However I would need his owner to keep up a similar approach too I think!

If you've got any canals near you then they're lovely to walk along in the rain. We spent an hour there today, didn't see another soul, the sound of the rain on the water was really relaxing and my dog had a lovely time sniffing all the hedge rows and watching the ducks.

I had a JR who detested the rain - if she was off lead she would bolt for home

My dog hates the rain. The only way to get her to go for a walk when it is wet is to put a coat on her. I know the dog you are walking isn't actually yours but is it possible for you to buy it a coat, do you think? (or borrow one/make one to see if it works).

My Lab detests the rain, he hates it in his eyes. He also hates swimming Confused.
Could the dog have bad eye sight? Sore joints? Is he used to the car or even walks in general...
