Unsettled, unwell dog - vets this evening

I’m very worried about my 9 yo springer and don’t know how to help him before our ver appointment this evening.
He was unsettled all night, crying, pacing. We got up multiple times to let him out. No diarrhoea or vomiting. He’s the same this morning. Can’t settle, crying, wants to go out but is only out for a minute then wants to come in. Won’t lie in his bed - keeps lying on the floor but getting up after a few seconds. Tail is tucked tightly between his legs and he wags if I speak to him.

He has a quite dodgy tummy normally and I changed his food three weeks ago. Stools have been more solid since and he’s much less stinky. He is sometimes looking at his back end but not washing, worrying at his bottom.
Any ideas to help him for now? I know there won’t be really - just wanted a hand hold really.

He sounds in pain. Is it possible to get him seen before this evening? If not then just sit with him as much as you can and encourage him to drink so he doesn't get dehydrated. I hope the vets can get on top of it quickly.

I think he sounds in pain too. Call your vets and ask if you can give him some paracetamol. My vet advised a very precise dose of normal paracetamol when he did his cruciate ligaments in on Christmas Day one year, so that he would be comfortable before I could take him in on Boxing Day.

Thanks. He is in pain. Isn’t any worse or better than when I spoke the the vet this morning and that was the earliest appointment we could manage. I’ll call them about pain relief though.
He’s just been farting a bit now, so hoping it’s just trapped wind! He also really wanted to eat so I’ve given him some food which he ate happily. Whether he was hungry or just thinking about his stomach, I don’t know!

I’m enjoying the excuse to sit down with him next to the radiator though. He’s settling for longer like this

Is he trying to vomit? Stomach distended? Any other signs of bloat?

Could be a myriad of things op but pancreatitis springs to mind, can the vet not see him sooner?

Sprig1 · 02/12/2020 12:43

I wouldn't give him any more food. It sounds as if he may have a blockage. If that's the case then more food in there won't help and in the worst case that when they see him later they decide he needs surgery they will want him to have an empty stomach.

parrotonmyshoulder · 02/12/2020 12:46

Thanks. He isn’t trying to vomit. I don’t know why he keeps wanting to go outside. Doesn’t try to poo - I think it’s just because he doesn’t know what to do with himself. I’ll try to get an earlier appt.

Thanks for the bloat info. Stomach feels soft I think.

Does he have impacted anal glands?
When were they last emptied?

When did he last poo? Possibly constipated?

Floralnomad · 02/12/2020 13:33

Is he weeing ok ?

Sprig1 · 02/12/2020 18:43

How did your vet appointment go?

RedRiverHog · 02/12/2020 19:00

Hope he's ok @parrotonmyshoulder

parrotonmyshoulder · 02/12/2020 19:05

Thanks. False alarm it seems. Nothing they could find wrong and he’s totally perked up now! Like when you take your really ill toddler to A&E and they’re fine the minute they get there!
