Experiences of Dandie dinmont, poodle, shih tzu, Minature Schnauzer or tibetan terrier

Jj2431 · 01/12/2020 18:40

Anyone have any experiences of the above breeds?

Are dandie dinmonts even easy to come by?

If i went for a poodle in the future I would go for a Minature because I'm petrified of the addisons disease risk with standards. My previous dog died because of Addisons disease so I want to minimise the risk.

Husband is set on Shih tzu but aren't they a bit snappy?

Are schnauzers yappy and snappy?

What about tibetans?

I have a poodle x shih tzu. She was rehomed so we didn’t have her as a puppy so can’t comment on that stage. She is a lovely dog, has lots of poodle traits (playing with toys/chasing balls/can walk for miles likes swimming in the sea) and also shih tzu traits (very loyal, loves a fuss, loves being near to us, likes to defend the house and loves the sound of her own voice - but has a deeper bark). She’s a bit mad around the edges and has some quirks but she’s great. And she doesn’t shed hair.

My in laws have a miniature schnauzer and he is a lovely dog. Really friendly and sweet. He is SO barky though. It's constant and worse now he's old and senile. And he's always been a chewer. My grandparents had 2 shi tzu's who were lovely little dogs, not snappy.

Mydogmylife · 01/12/2020 23:58

Lhasa apso , very similar in appearance to shitzu, lovely wee dogs, goid natured , maybe worth a look

Paddingtonthebear · 02/12/2020 10:49

Aww yes I also had a Lhasa many years ago. Lovely dog. But she was very much a lap dog, didn’t really like walks much, never chased a ball or toy. Didn’t even like treading on wet grass 🤣

MrsBungle · 02/12/2020 10:56

I have a mini poodle. She does have a little bit of lab in her (her granny was a lab but bar that all poodle heritage). She is amazing. So friendly and loving. She doesn't shed which is also a bonus for me. She does go to the groomers every 6 weeks though and I brush her most days. She is like my shadow, she hates being on her own (which she isn't very often).

fallfallfall · 02/12/2020 11:05

I have a tibbie. Pure breed. Excellent natured dog. Good recall and trustworthy with children and other dogs. SHEDS 365 days a year! BS that it’s only a twice a year event!
Great walker.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 02/12/2020 11:31

Dandie’s are very special but they are also an endangered breed in the U.K., so you are right, the wait for a puppy can be long.

Well, mines a boy so maybe a bit different lol not a lap dog although does enjoy a cuddle if invited up. He loves a walk, especially in winter in snow, but definately is not a ball/ toy chaser, in fact the look he gives if you throw a ball for him is really quite funny! Just as well they're all that wee bit different eh? He's got me through many a difficult time, I love him dearly.
RegretnaGreen · 02/12/2020 14:55

I used to look after a DD and she was delightful and everybody loved her huge eyes. I used to cart her about in a rucksack when she got tired. I would have one in a shot given half a chance!

JeNeComprendsPas · 02/12/2020 14:59

I have a shih-tzu cross who is totally neurotic, he's a rescue though and we're not sure what he was subjected to.
I also have two mini schnauzers. Despite excellent socialisation as pups and the kennel club good citizen training they're very vocal in the house and quite reactive to other dogs on walks. They're lovely, friendly dogs (when I say reactive I mean yappy rather than aggressive or anything), one is very obedient, the other has selective deafness on walks so is kept on a lead mostly. They love nothing more than lying on my lap being stroked though and are very affectionate.
I'm not sure I'd have either breed again to be honest!

cherrypie790 · 02/12/2020 15:00

We rescued an 8 year old tibetan terrier. He was lovely with the DC, but did his own thing and completely ignored us! He was rarely let off lead as it was a nightmare getting him back, and I'd imagine they're quite hyper as puppies. Not a dog that you get if you're not prepared to put the training in. We've got 2 spaniels now that are exactly the same and you can never let your guard down with - training is ongoing and constant Hmm

Neighbours have got 3 beautiful miniature schnauzers. They are lovely dogs but jesus wept, they bark, bark and bark........... not a breed I'd ever choose for that reason. And it's a really ear piercing yip.

CupboardMonster · 02/12/2020 15:05

I used to walk a DD, he was hilarious and full of character but also one of the most stubborn dogs I've ever met.

bubbletrouble1 · 02/12/2020 15:10

Mini schnauzers aren't my favorite. The ones I've met are all a bit yappy, awful off lead, and aggressive. Not to mention needs lots of grooming.

bestbefore · 02/12/2020 15:12

I have a mini schnauzer and she's fine, doesn't bark a lot - she does at foxes in the garden and the postman obvs but on walks she's v shy - she invented social distancing actually 😊 - she's independent and likes to take her time going past other dogs. Quite a character!

Paddingtonthebear · 02/12/2020 15:22

My friend had a Tibetan, lovely dog but a nightmare puppy, she had to see a dog psychologist. He turned out ok in the end though!

fallfallfall · 02/12/2020 15:57

Misread mine is a Tibetan spaniel! Not terrier.

Ylvamoon · 02/12/2020 21:40

I have TibetanTerriers, I like their quirky and fun loving personality.

Granted, they are not for everyone and puppies are hardwork. In the right hands, they are an amazing dogs, not faced by much, as long as they can be with their humans.

MissShapesMissStakes · 02/12/2020 22:44

I have a mini poodle. I wouldn't have anything else. He's fantastic. Loves a walk but also fine if we only get a short one. He's amazingly lovely with my kids. He loves dh the most - despite the fact he was the one I had to convince to get a dog, never mind a 'frilly poodle' - he's not frilly in any way! Basically it's because dh throws the ball the furthest I think.

He's clever and food motivated plus he genuinely seems to want to please. So he's been easy to train.

He's a little nervous of other dogs but that's because he's had a couple of rubbish incidents as a puppy where bigger dogs have jumped all over him (while he was in a lead so really not his fault). That shows in just a reluctance to play with bigger dogs. He just rolls over onto his back or stands really still hoping the bigger dog won't see him, then runs past them in stealth mode Grin

He doesn't shed at all. We keep him short all over so brushing isn't a huge deal as he's cut every five weeks costing £35.

He's not yappy at all. Though he will bark at squirrels or the postman.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 02/12/2020 22:50

I've known a few Tibetan terriers. All different personalities but they had stuff in common such as they were all lovely natured, but my god they're hard work. Stubborn, can be very aloof, they'll only listen if there's something in it for them, very intelligent and they'll make their own fun so don't let them get bored. They can be incredibly ignorant. I baby sat my friends tt puppy for a week. Put me off puppies for life.

Atalune · 02/12/2020 22:52

Our pup is a Jack Russel shitzu cross and she is heaven.

Loves to sit and sleep but also great fun and likes to play games, train and walk. Very very quiet and rarely a peep from her. Good natured and responding well to training.

Annasgirl · 02/12/2020 22:55

I have a Shih Tzu. She is a puppy. We picked the breed specifically because they are gentle, non-barking, child friendly and hypo allergenic. She is all of the above. A total joy. Kids adore her and she adores them. The biting gets less every day and we have worked on training her as per Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy - book recommended on here.

TheBitterBoy · 02/12/2020 22:57

I have a Tibetan terrier, she's a lovely dog, full of personality. Yes she can be stubborn, if she doesn't see the point of doing something she's won't do it, but after persistent training on our part she has good recall and is a calm friendly dog. You need to be willing to keep on top of the grooming, although they don't shed at all, they need regular brushing even if you keep their coats short as they are very prone to matts. She was a very lively puppy but has calmed down as she's got older and is a delight now.

pilates · 05/12/2020 18:32

I have a miniature schnauzer and he is gorgeous. Loves being with you and barks when he wants to go to bed which means he wants us to go with him. He is very friendly and loves loves playing chase with other dogs. I have had to train him not to bark as he used to get very excited when he saw other dogs but he’s 2 and much better, so it can be done. He does need grooming every 7/8 weeks. They don’t shed or smell which is a positive as can’t stand the smell of dogs.

Funf · 06/12/2020 16:55

Shizu
Personally I would avoid due to breathing issues with the flat face, now having had Two Lhasa apsos, one for 14 years and the other for 16 years ( both at the same time) they are excellent companions and great with small children, when they sadly passed away we looked long and hard for a dog that fitted our needs.
Good companion
Play full
Good walker but happy with a small walk too.
No shedding.
Travel easily in a crate
Friendly.
Only one dog fits the bill and its a Dandie
They are hardy, intelligent, friendly, good watchdog, but rarely bark. They are not too excitable – like some breeds of terrier – but they very much have a mind of their own so require good firm training, but not difficult to train, just repetition .
If we are out and other dogs bark at her she is totally silent as they are originally bred for hunting and a barking dog is useless for this.
She is the fifth dog in our life time and we would have no hesitation in having another, if you have to wait its for good reason, they are never puppy farmed as a Big Dandie litter is two pups so no money in breeding them. And also less health issues.
One we met one in the flesh and our mind was made up we contacted the three clubs who cater for Dandies and they put us in touch with several breeders, two weeks later we had one.
www.donthibernate.co.uk/dummys-guide-to-dandie-dinmont-terriers/

Only real down side is you shouldn't have small furry pets with them and you need to keep hedge hogs out of the garden but you should do this with many breeds.

Funf · 06/12/2020 17:01

If you do get a non shedding breed its worth getting the equipment to groom them your self, our breeder showed us how, it saves a few quid over the years.
