My 3 year old cockapoo had a seizure of some type this evening. He suddenly lost his balance and went vacant. He couldn’t walk for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes he came around and became his usual bouncy self. This is the second time in 6 weeks it’s happened. We put the first incident down to him banging his head. I’m just hoping it’s nothing sinister. He’s my children’s best friend.

Did you take him to or speak to the vets the first time? Have you spoken to them this evening? 30 minutes is a long time for the dog to not be able to actually walk.
There are many things that can cause seizures so As well as a basic checkup , the vet will probably take some bloods and may well refer for a scan.

Big hand hold though, I know it can be scary but hopefully it will be a treatable issue - for instance I’ve had dogs live long happy lives with epilepsy before.

My dog had a couple of grand mal seizures overnight over course of few months, she'd be quite disoriented after but it can temporarily effect sight. She had a metabolic blood test & was deemed too old 7+ for it to be epilepsy so more likely brain lesion cause. If she'd had so many within a period they'd have medicated & sure its same treatment whatever the cause, but as it happened she's not had anymore & its been about 5yrs so guess wasn't a lesion either.

My friends cockerpoo started having frequent seizures while awake & is now on medication for epilepsy which has stopped them & isn't very expensive.

Thank you both. We went to the vets yesterday. The first time it happened was in the middle of the night. And he banged his head beforehand. He picked up really quickly so we just thought he had disorientated himself. They’ve taken some bloods. All his other checks were fine.

They can be disoriented for an hour after a seizures so don't worry. Its best to leave them in quiet room after a seizure. My dog is epileptic and has seizures hes on medication. He still has seizures but the tablets stop him having so many. Hopefully your vet will tell you whether its epilepsy or something else. The epilepsy medication is not expensive.
