Night time with puppy

Hi

First time dog owner here. I have a 9 week old pug puppy, he has been with us since Tues so basically 4 days in full.

He is a crazy little thing, lots of cuddles and chewing of course. He is doing OK toileting, has a pad at the back door as he cries and shivers when we take him outside for too long (we will persevere with that of course) but he will go on his own at times, probably only every couple of hours so it not too stressful.

Night time he is amazing at going off, pretty much no crying at all from day 1. He sleeps for up to 4 hours at a time, he had a wee about 10pm last night, went to sleep about 1030 then woke at 210. I took him for a wee, he went after a couple of mins then straight back to bed. Pretty much the same the night before. The 3 nights before he went till after 3am then sleep till 7am.

These last 2 nights he has also woken at 4am. My husband works shifts and Sat/Sun gets up at 4. The first night pup woke for a poo at 4 so that was fine but this morning woke up when DH got up, he cried but didn't need a poo or wee.

I guess what I am asking is that should he be able to go longer than 4 hours in the night? Last water about 9pm, should we take it away earlier? He is tiny so it may be right, and the extra 4am waking may just be because of DH getting up and disturbing him.

Any tips?

Thank you so much

We have 2 cats and they will eat anything, they love baked beans, sweetcorn, gravy, peas and curry. We have to be so careful as they will just lick our plates clean after dinner. One of them licked the remnants of an ice cream bowl that was in the sink and was promptly sick everywhere. We were told cats generally only eat what they are supposed to but that is totally untrue. One of them likes tea with 2 sugars also. We found out as we were woken up to slurping in the middle of the night. DH had fallen asleep and not drunk his tea and one of the cats took a liking to it.

We now put everything away and treat them as we would dogs!

Just seen the vet. They have said to not let him out in the garden unless we can disinfect the patio area every day then keep him on that bit. They said as he is learning fast re the mat they would not forsee the transition difficult at all and that many people use pads and don't have issues.

I’m glad you posted that. We’re getting desperate here and going outside seems a long way off but there’s no way our boy would be safe in our garden, it’s big and no way to contain him in a small area.

Breeder messaged me earlier asking how he’s getting on and I told her the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth Grin all the other huskies are doing great except ours. I blame the kids for picking the demon puppy! No seriously though I’ve been looking up puppy behaviours and all should start improving soon. He’s bored in the house despite having a million toys and is teething.

I am very naive and didn’t think it would be this hard.

Yes I'm reassured we were all told the same thing. I've another 2 weeks now before mine can go out and also desperate to get him out for an evening walk so hes tired for the evening. Having such a nightmare getting him to sleep, I'm much more sleep deprived than I was with my dc as babies. He hates the crate with a passion and I'm considering abandoning it altogether!

Luckily pugs are tiny so don't need as much exercise, I think running round the lounge us enough for him. When I was researching them they were likened to cats and sleep soooo much. He fell asleep at 9pm last night and we tried to wake him at 10 to take him up to bed but just couldn't get him to wake up enough so we just popped him in the crate upstairs. He woke at 230 for a wee and a poo then at 630am.

If you are able to clean the garden proprtly every morning the vet said it is probably safe due to their natural immunity but not 100% guaranteed even then. I just don't want to take the chance. He has his jabs on 21st Dec then I believe its a week to wait after that.

Our garden isn't huge but its a patio then the artificial grass, he is too small to climb onto the decking (he is dinky, his back is only 20cm long) however he just wants to run round the garden crazily now and not actually wee, I just don't think it will actually be beneficial to him. We tried it for a day or so then everyone posted on here and another thread so I kept him in. He cried at the door for a day now is not bothered again.
