We have a 10 week old puppy. Hes not had second injections yet. He is so hyper in a morning due to sleeping all night and having lots of energy once I can I plan on walking him first thing but till then am looking for good ideas to help him be alittle calmer we allow him to run around garden but he often refuses first thing he has loads of toys. I am thinking maybe a mentally stimulating toys may help?

Feed him his breakfast from a snuffle mat, play ball in the garden, Google DIY dog enrichment games. My pup loves the towel burrito.

Wrap some treats or kibble up in an old towel so he has to snuffle them out. Scatter kibble into grass so he has to find it with his nose. Or in a box with lots of screwed up paper (make sure he doesn't eat paper). For wet food, use a kong or lickimat so he has to lick or chew it out. Use a clicker and teach random tricks - free shaping tricks with a clicker is great fun and really challenges them mentally (so tires them out really quickly!). Hide toys or treats around the house (or hide yourself if he'll let you out of sight) and get him to go find - this can help raise the value of the toys too. Start by letting him see you hide it and build up to him having to go search on his own.

Sniffing, licking and chewing are all calming activities so should help him to settle. Running, chasing and tugging are all very exciting activities and might make him hyper or over tired if he does too much.

I would walk him anyway, but just in your arms or a carrier etc. At least he’s getting out and about, and experiencing things. Mental stimulation is tiring

Harleyisme · 27/11/2020 12:39

We do walk him in out in our arms we can't do it for to long at the moment as hes getting big and doesn't like being carried hes eager to explore. Thank you for all the ideas.

This is my concern when we pick up our Labrador puppy! Have no idea how heavy he’s going to be, or long I’ll manage with carrying!

What breed?
Towel is a great idea.
We play Fetch or hide treats in Kong type toys, Pigs ears and Pizzles keep them quiet once they are old enough to have them
Mix in a bit of Training sit come etc in to play time

We carried our lab pup in a supermarket bag for life (not a plastic one),a handle each due to the weight.

@Derbee we got a cheap pet buggy for our Retrieverpup and it was the best decision we ever made.

This is what I’m tempted to do!

Retrievemysanity · 29/11/2020 21:42

@Derbee you do get a lot of attention though!
