Dog very poorly - my fault as I gave her a roast knuckle bone

Poor dog (fox red Labrador) is currently at the emergency vets with DH hooked up to a drip after being sick about 10 times today and then had bright red blood diarrhoea (lots).

I'm so so worried about her. I bought her a roast knuckle bone from Pets at home at the weekend which she really enjoyed.

Now I'm so worried it will kill her. I'm petrified, she's only 3.

I am so sorry to hear that. Fingers crossed for you and doggie 🐾

SuperAlly · 26/11/2020 21:48

Why do you think it’s that? If it was that she would have been ill several days ago surely?

girlcrushonvillanelle · 26/11/2020 21:54

I don't know, she had it late on Sunday afternoon. She had runny poo yesterday.

Fingers crossed it's not. But she is certainly very sick. I couldn't forgive myself if it's the bone.

SockDrawer · 26/11/2020 21:56

In what way do you think it was the bone? Has she had bones before?

Baybetterdays · 26/11/2020 21:58

Oh OP, this sounds like bleeding gastritis - not necessarily an obstruction though if it is, she’s in the right place. My dogs have eaten some absolute horrors in their lives - a live baby pigeon (lab), a wired burglar alarm (lab), a packet of balloons (lab). As well as all the bones and things I’ve bought for them. I’m sure it’ll be ok; don’t be too hard on yourself.

girlcrushonvillanelle · 26/11/2020 22:00

She has never really had bones before.

The vet also said it could be pancreatitis which can be caused by eating something that is very fatty. This bone was very fatty. The amount of blood that has come out of her this evening was frightening.

A roast bone isn’t very likely to cause pancreatitis in itself. I’ve been where you are and it’s just heartbreaking but if she’s that poorly 3 days later it’s not the bone OP. You’re in for a rubbish night but here’s hoping for better news tomorrow. Again, I’ve had a bleeding dog in emergency vet skipping around 24hrs later. You don’t know until you know. I feel for you. Good luck OP.

SockDrawer · 26/11/2020 22:08

I really doubt it’s the bone. I can see that you’re scared though OP. Try and remind yourself: she’s being looked after, she’s in the best place.

girlcrushonvillanelle · 26/11/2020 22:09

Thank you for some hope. I have everything crossed for her.

I'm so sorry, I hope she's ok.

If it helps, my dog as had pancreatitis and was on a drip for several days when he was just over a year old. He was very very unwell - vomiting and red diarrhoea. I was absolutely terrified, and also blamed myself for letting him hoover up scraps (he's a nightmare for scavenging). I really thought we were going to lose him.

However, he is nearly 5 and snoozing on the sofa now. Although we have to be careful with his diet as he's quite sensitive, he is otherwise healthy. I hope it goes the same way for your dog. She is in the best place to be looked after for now.

Our elderly collie had pancreatitis last year and needed treatment and lots of TLC to get better- they amaze you with their fight to get better, as terrifying as it is to see them that way. We had the exact symptoms you describe and were beside ourselves. It was awful and no real conclusion about what caused it. Best of luck to your DDog

mummymayhem18 · 26/11/2020 22:12

Hope your dog is ok. X

RLOU30 · 26/11/2020 22:16

Hi OP, my dog just got back from a 3 night stay and operation at the vets for something similar. They had to open him up to check nothing was stuck inside and it turned out to be pancreatitis (which I suspected because he had a bit too much fat in his diet only recently) I was like you thinking I would never forgive myself but luckily he is now home on the mend. Strict diet forever though. They are strong old things -be hopeful 💓

MiddleClassMother · 26/11/2020 22:20

Fingers crossed for her, stay strong OP, they worry you more than children at times I'm sure! Like others have said I don't think it's the bone that made her sick, don't be harsh on yourself x

KnitsAndGiggles · 26/11/2020 22:23

Fingers crossed for your lovely dog OP - and don't blame yourself, it might be nothing to do with the bone but either way you didn't do it on purpose Flowers

Wellthisismorethanabitgrim · 26/11/2020 22:30

I doubt it's the bone OP, Ddog has those exact ones as a treat every now and again and we've had no problems.

Fingers and paws crossed here for your girl, hope you get some good news soon x

PrincessGraceless · 26/11/2020 23:18

Our dog has had very bad pancreatitis more than once. He’s now almost 15! We didn’t realise it could be triggered by fat - animal fat in his case. Even just a tiny bit. He’s fine with fish oil. We’re now super careful with diet and give him enzymes etc. He’s a small, delicate dog and is doing fine (fingers crossed). A young lab has a very good chance indeed of bouncing right back. Smile But don’t let them send her home too soon - she may need a short in-patient stay. Could be the pancreas or gastritis. There are several possibilities that cause alarming symptoms that are absolutely treatable.
Please don’t blame yourself - you were giving her a treat. You sound like a very loving owner. Hugs.

vanillandhoney · 27/11/2020 07:07

Of course it's not your fault as you didn't know, but roasted bones are so so dangerous and it still shocks me that they're sold in pet shops.

Roasted and cooked bones can splinter and can cause perforations and blockages. Dogs should only ever be given raw, non-weight baring bones. Morrison's meaty bones are great, or ask your butcher for some bones for the dog.

To PP - yes, this incident could well be from the bone. Obstructions can take days to cause problems and if the bone has been sat undigested for a while, it's entirely possible the problems could only have just started.

I'm really not saying this to make you feel bad OP - the bone was there in the pet shop and of course you just bought it in good faith, but like rawhide, these treats should not be allowed - they're just not worth the risk.

SockDrawer · 27/11/2020 16:06

How’s she doing today @girlcrushonvillanelle ?

pilates · 27/11/2020 16:13

Any news op?

girlcrushonvillanelle · 27/11/2020 17:28

Thanks for your messages.

Confirmed gastro infection which has caused pancreatitis. She is very sick, but should hopefully get through it.

What's annoying is our vets only opens during the day so she has to be transferred to the overnight vet about 30 mins away. The inconvenience isn't an issue but we worry that it is stressing her out. She is being transferred now and we will have to bring her back tomorrow and then probably another overnight stay.

OP posts:
pilates · 27/11/2020 18:27

Is it from eating something dodgy?

They are a worry, but I’m sure she’s in good hands 💐

girlcrushonvillanelle · 27/11/2020 18:34

Yes, something she has eaten. She is a bit of a scavenger and had been to the beach a few times this week.

We'll never know for sure what it was, but I certainly won't be buying one of those again.

Good job we have insurance!

Oh OP - sending lots of love. My lab gets really ill if she has lamb (we only knew this after we adopted her when she was 3). She had colitis once and that was awful. Hope your gorgeous doggo is home soon.

vanillandhoney · 27/11/2020 19:50

Bless her, fingers crossed for a speedy recovery! Flowers
