Rescue pup won’t toilet outside

We have been lucky enough to rescue a little mixed breed pup from abroad. The litter was abandoned when they were pretty young and fostered in a home rather than a kennel until 16 weeks.

She’s gorgeous and a very happy puppy but we have been totally unable to crack toilet training even though she was pretty much toilet trained in the foster home. She is happy to go outside but simply refuses to wee or poo outside and will wait till she’s inside again every time. We are taking her out lots and on the rare occasion she’s been out so long she’s given up and gone she’s been lavishly rewarded. When we go out for a walk she sniffs lampposts etc but doesn’t Mark at all. She’s the only dog I’ve ever had who can walk for half an hour without a hint of a wee.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated as it’s been a few weeks now and it’s getting a tad depressing.

Dont worry about not weeing or pooing on a walk that can take a while to get sorted.

Getting her to wee outside in your garden would be my priority.

I would take her outside (you must go with her ever time) then when she doesnt wee bring her in, keep her in one room and then after a few minutes take her out again. How long does it take for her to wee indoors once she has come back in? If it is 10 mins take her out in 5 and do the same thing each time.

So out no wee, in for a bit but keep her in your sight, then out again. You will need to be consistent with this for a while. Reward like mad when she has completely finished the wee or poo. Do let her finish it or else she will come indoors and finish off.

@PollyRoulson thank you, this is what we’re trying to do but it’s not easy and unfortunately our house is open plan so no restricted area to keep her (it’s a very inconvenient layout). Trouble is she usually wees within a minute of coming inside it’s like she’s just holding it until she’s is the warm. For poos we’re getting better at spotting the signs. We’ll persevere it’s just annoying.

Not pleasant at this time of year, but has worked well for any stubborn/difficult pups we’ve had:

Get yourself wrapped up, get a flask of tea and a good book/tablet/gardening gear, pop pup on lead and get out in the garden for the day. Every time she toilets, praise, praise, praise and treat. The longest I’ve had to do this for was 2 days. I find it works best if you designate an area of the garden for toileting and only take them out to toilet on lead for the foreseeable too. Don’t forget to add in a command when she does toilet (ie. be quick/business/wee wee). We’ve had a fair few who’ve been hard to toilet train, this has always worked.

Also be sure you’re using the correct cleaner to clean up any accidents indoors, and if there are any puppy pads around, get them up and in the bin.
