Lumpy scar after spay

2 yr old border bitch was spayed in October, she had 6 seasons and 6 phantom pregnancies in that time she was fucking miserable so I don't regret having her spayed at all. She was either bleeding or nesting. Then during the spay they found she only had one ovary so definitely they right thing to do.

However l noticed today she has a really really lumpy scar where she had the spay. She's got a lot of hard tissue underneath the scar. Does this warrant a vet visit?

Not a vet...

But it looks fine to me - I’m assuming she’s had her post op checks and what have you?

FMyUterus · 26/11/2020 00:02

Yeah she did, they didn't really say a lot because the vet was called to an emergency. But I assume it would have been flagged if it was an issue

Our bitch had a spay scar which felt lumpy to me. I didn't take her in specifically for that reason, but next time we we're at the vets I did ask the vet to check it out. They said it was perfectly normal and would be less lumpy over time. Over a year later now it's no longer lumpy.

Also not a vet but have had lots of dogs spayed and it looks fine to me. Not all are nice neat scars unfortunately.

My dog just had surgery and his scar was lumpy too apparently it’s just because their skin is different to human skin so doesn’t stitch as neat 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you all! I felt so bad having her spayed initially as I didn't really want to because we got our other dog neutered and my god keeping the weight off him is so hard i didn't want that for her but the phantom pregnancies were just horrific. She would carry toys around and nest with them, then it became hats and socks, she produced milk and tried to get them to feed. The final straw was when I was away and my husband didn't realise she was having one and we were face-timing and she was carrying a ball around crying so he took it from her and threw it thinking she wanted to play fetch and the scream/ Yelp when he threw her 'baby' was heart breaking she hid under the bed for a few hours after that and I booked her spay the next day

Not a spay - obviously, lol

But that was I think 4 or 5 weeks post op, you can see how thick and lumpy the scar is... it went down loads still after that, by the time his coat was all in properly and some decent time had passed it was much more of an actual flat scar.

(Not a current dog btw, its an old photo)

Yeah, perforated ulcer - had to have a duodenectomy and bowel resection.... or as my own vet put it while checking the stitches - they really had all his intestine out on the table... in a weird excited voice btw, rofl.

But - it did flatten down loads after that, I just can’t give a comparison pic as I don’t have one. As long as it was all the right colour and not painful, they were never worried about it - so I’m assuming its just part of it healing.

DDog's spay scar looked similar a month or so after her operation, three months on and it has gone down a lot. It's early days, will probably fade with time.
