May I ask a question about DDog’s poo?

I have never had a dog before so I don’t know if this is normal. DDog (small spaniel type) does two-three poos on a walk. The first one is usually a firm, solid poo but the next two-three are usually small, runny, sometimes a bit mucus-y. Is it normal to have a firm poo and then a runny poo every day?

He eats well and is on a particular brand of specialist food due to being allergic to pretty much everything. Good coat and skin condition etc, at last check up vet said he was really healthy.

Is this sort of pooing normal? This has been going on for months now. I guess I’m just wondering if it’s usual or should I mention it to the vet?

I would say that isn’t normal for my dog. Also, it would drive me mad having to pick up three poos on a walk (especially runny ones!) every single time.

I would really, really recommend raw feeding. It changes their poos completely and I’d be really surprised if it didn’t help.

LizzyELane · 24/11/2020 12:03

Normal for my working type labrador. The longer the exercise session the more the poo deteriorates from normal to small bits of runny. It's annoying and gross when you can barely pick it up in a bag but seems to just be the effect of continuous energetic running. The mucus however may suggest colitis which ours used to get before we changed to grain-free food.

IHaveAGreyLamp · 24/11/2020 18:35

We are already on grain free (and pea and soy and most other things free) because he does have quite bad food allergies but I’m wondering if I should switch to another brand. I might try that and see if it works.

how old is he?

our cocker started out like that. First poo solid, second poo mushy and third poo runny. But now we have him settled on different food, most poos are solid. In fact I found one last tray of his old puppy food yesterday and gave it to him and he did a 3 stage hard soft runny poo today so I think in our case it was food related!

Darklane · 24/11/2020 20:29

One of mine is sometimes like that as she has IBD & has been in pills for it for years. I find adding tinned Chappie to her meals makes a huge difference at helping to firm things up if she’s going through a flare up.

Thats normal for my spaniel terrier cross and also for the terrier we had before him. We used to call her 3-shits-milly. I have a theory that it's the excitement of the walk but I've completely made that up so I'm probably talking bollocks!

EcoCustard · 24/11/2020 20:37

Normal for my two working spaniels. Always has been. One at the start of their walk and two towards the end, it’s as if they get so excited from the endless running it gives them the slight runs. They have always done it, they are 10 now and on a half raw, half working maintenance kibble diet.

Well my one does an adrenaline poo (as I call it) sometimes so I do think it has some truth in it Smile
Hesnotlocal · 25/11/2020 14:18

I'm sure I read somewhere that when that happens the first poo is because they need to go (so it's well formed etc). After that they're using it to leave their scent behind so it's stuff that's not really been digested as well. Can't remember where I read it though so could be entirely wrong!

bloodywhitecat · 25/11/2020 14:20

Normal for my spaniel/terrier cross, he is slightly better on a raw diet but we still get an adrenaline poo on most walks.

vanillandhoney · 25/11/2020 15:36

It can be very normal. It's not something I would consider changing food over, tbh.

Madbengalmum · 25/11/2020 15:39

If it is mucus in the poop, sound like your dog has colitis. Food may not be right for him.

PawsAndPhytoncides · 25/11/2020 15:44

If you're not already, then I would strongly recommend getting under the care of a professional for the allergies.

Food intolerances are tricky things and it really requires a great deal of planning and dedication to narrow down what the dog is intolerant to.

If you've already done this so KNOW it's pea and soy then it's worth mentioning the poos to whichever medical professional has been helping you (vet, dermatologist etc).

If you haven't seen anyone about it and are trying to diagnose food intolerances at home, then it's worth seeking help.

bm2021 · 25/11/2020 15:50

Not usually normal on the regular basis you describe. This along with the intolerances suggest something is not quite right so I'd seek help from a qualified canine nutritionist (vets are generally not hugely clued up on nutrition alone) as your first port of call. Is your dog of an anxious or very excitable disposition?

Bamaluz · 25/11/2020 15:57

Very normal according to my vet when I asked about the same issue.

yearinyearout · 25/11/2020 15:59

Pretty normal yes. I call the later softer poos "excited poos" because if we were at home she wouldn't need to go out for it, it's just because she's out having fun.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 25/11/2020 16:07

Yes, BastardDog is a three poo pup sometimes - usually if we have over-fed him or he has had treats.

muddyford · 25/11/2020 16:08

I would say that sounds normal with an active dog, such as my springer spaniel. I call the third, runny one 'the end of the barrel'.

Katinthedoghouse · 25/11/2020 16:10

WC here and yes, totally normal for us. We call them excitement poos.

We also have another type of poo that comes immediately after getting out of cold water. We call that the cold water shock poo.

Frlrlrubert · 25/11/2020 16:55

Yes, we call our oldest working cocker Rigby-three-shits. Especially when excited for a walk. The younger one not so much, she does that 'walking shit line' thing instead. Stand still and poo you stupid animal!

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 25/11/2020 18:41

Just to say, my rescue dog started with me on high quality wet food, 70% at least meat content (as advised by the rescue centre vet when I got her). She had intermittent loose poo and mucus so I consulted my own vet after a couple of months and he said she was likely to be allergic to one or more of the meats in the wet food and advised I put her on grain-free food. I did and all has been well ever since (some years now). I use grain-free dry food mixed with grain-free wet food (James Wellbeloved do pouches of grain-free wet food). I still occasionally have to pick up 3 poos (often 2) per walk but that's because she likes her food and treats (also grain-free) so much and is a spoiled madam.
