She's 14 and has never done this before, so I was very shocked and sickened to see her eat a big pile of it on our walk today. Can't quite stop the churning in my stomach to be honest!

Any idea why she's done this as it's so out of character. I definitely need to make sure she doesn't do this again 🤢🤢🤢

Probably because it smelt nice!

It is disgusting but it won't do her any harm. You could teach a "leave it" command but if she's determined it won't stop her.

Mine is particular to fresh, warm cow pat Grin

munchkintrouble · 21/11/2020 19:19

It's just so off that it's the first time she's ever done it. I could understand it if it was a regular thing. I still feel sick thinking about it

Pretty standard occurrence for my dog. I tell him he's a grim bastard but there's nothing I can do to stop him... It's rank and turns my stomach every time 🤢🤢

Liftup · 21/11/2020 19:23

be grateful its been once. my dog is a demon for this and grabs anyone he comes across, its incredibly disgusting and difficult to train out of him.
it can be as PP said just because it smelled "good" depending on what the dog had eaten. it can also be a sign of vitamin deficiency so maybe mention it to your vet too, and consider what your dog is eating on a daily basis in case they could be missing out on something (common if you feed dry kibble type food)

munchkintrouble · 21/11/2020 20:58

Gross isn't it, she has dry kibble with a little bit of wet food too. It's really odd and I'm praying it's not going to happen again, I wondered if it was an illness or something like that to cause it as like I say, being 14 and never done it before I never expected it to happen !

Try feeding her more meat in her diet. If they don't get fed much meat and then they smell the meat in the poop they might try to eat it.

ZiggysPFrow · 21/11/2020 22:24

Yep, some dogs do this out of habit and sometimes because they are lacking something in their diet (either from the wrong food or because they aren't able to absorb it from food anymore). If it becomes a regular thing mention it to your vet.. Or ideally find a holistic vet with a nutrition qualification as they'd be the most helpful

LeaveMyDamnJam · 21/11/2020 22:26

I’ll bet the poo was from a dog who was feed raw or wet food. This is nectar to other dogs.

Gingaaarghpussy · 21/11/2020 23:26

My dog used to do that when I first got him. I came to the conclusion that it was because he used to be the bottom of the pile with his previous owners so didn't get as much food as the rest of his pack. Once he realised all food put down was for him he stopped.

Funf · 22/11/2020 06:44

Have to keep ours away from it, clean up as soon as she does one, she loves sheep poo which can be difficult when out and about so using the leave command.

ImAncient · 22/11/2020 06:47

Mine is particularly partial to rabbit poo. She has great recall. Apart from when there is any rabbit poo to eat.

Girlintheframe · 22/11/2020 07:22

We walk through a field with highland cattle in it. I keep Ddog on a lead as he is partial to 'snacks'. (Obv always on lead if the cattle are actually in the field but often they are not)
He also loves rabbit and sheep's poo. Very very occasionally he's eaten another dogs poo. Have to agree it's very grim

Icanflyhigh · 22/11/2020 07:26

Quite often a sign of vitamin deficiency in older dogs. We had a black lab who used to eat her own poo followed by as much potting compost as she could fit in if we didn't keep a close eye on her.
Change of diet sorted her out, but do consult your vet first.

Happyoldbat · 22/11/2020 07:31

I seem to remember hearing on television years ago something about some research into the reasons why dogs do this, and that the conclusion was that it just tastes nice. My male dog certainly thinks so. He likes it fresh from source and often ends up with a poo on his head.

Paperdolly · 22/11/2020 07:57

This is another reason dog owners should pick their dog’s poo up! Mines like a Womble and eats all that’s left around. It’s not a pleasure to have her off lead on walks. She just goes poo hunting. 🙁

Somethingkindaoooo · 22/11/2020 08:19

Are you sure it was dog poo?

Theres a few hidden spots on our local park where, I believe, people relieve themselves. My dog always tries to make a beeline. If I don't stop him, he'll find something delicious, and come out chewing/ snacking his chops.

Dogs are so gross.

But- all our food, and dog food is so full of preservatives. There will be un/ partially digested material in it.

Seriously- loads of dogs do it.

My old dog used to loooooove cat poo.

Again- dogs are gross!!

SimonJT · 22/11/2020 08:26

Mine does this, we went on a walk with our neighbour and his three dogs a few weeks ago. Lets just say our neighbour didn’t need to use any poo bags.

GrubbsGrady · 22/11/2020 08:27

Its normally a sign of poor diet and nutrition especially if she is now elderly and her needs are constantly changing what dry/wet brand do you feed her ? All about dog food is a good site to find something thats high quality

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/11/2020 08:28

It's what some dogs do, I'm afraid. DD's labrador ate human poo (lorry driver's waiting area), it smelled of curry. Vom, vom, vom. She had to have her mouth hosed out.

SJaneS49 · 22/11/2020 10:18

Mine has always done it since puppyhood (her own, any other animals). Her breath afterwards is just rank! Her recall is ok and I usually supervise garden loo break visits. She has IBD and on occasion it’s led to a really bad bout -I feed her Verm-X supplements daily which seems to have cut down on the episodes of illness after an old poo guzzle!

pinkbalconyrailing · 22/11/2020 10:20

she probably did that before...
it's normal behaviour for a dog.
and one of the reasons you shouldn't kiss it or let it lick your face.
