Best flea treatment

We've been using frontline since we got our spaniel but he still has some black bugs walking over his fur which I'm guessing are fleas? Any recommendations for a treatment that works?

Ask you vet

BiteyShark · 17/11/2020 18:33

Prescription ones are best.

I have used advocate but didn't like the spot on types so changed to nexgard spectra which is a monthly tablet that treats certain worms, fleas and ticks.

There are others so as PP said probably best to ask your vet.

Funf · 17/11/2020 18:52

We use Advocate too

Gifgif · 17/11/2020 18:53

We use the collars.

maverickallthetime · 17/11/2020 18:59

Ok I'll check with the vets. Thanks

Frontline is terrible since they started selling it in Asda!
I don’t use any flea treatment on my dog until he actually gets them. Which has happened once in his 8 years.
Then it was a haircut, wash with tea tree shampoo and a few drops of tea tree oil on his collar.
Do we all Medicate our children every month against nits? No....we treat them when they get them!

We're having a nightmare with fleas at the moment. Our dog ironically picked them up at the vets when he was in for the day in September. So far, they have survived two lots of prescription spot-on, two baths with different flea shampoos, umpteen combings, two doses of Capstar and one dose of Nexgard Spectra. We spray the house with Indorex, boil-wash his bedding and his car blankets, hoover daily and steam-mop all the floors every time we treat him but somehow the little buggers are still surviving. I am at my wits' end. A Seresto collar is our next plan, but do you really have to wash your hands every time you touch a dog when it's wearing one, because I know DS won't remember.

@nanny2012nanny he has fleas- black bugs and scratches all the time! We've used frontline for 3 months and they've not gone

Those chemicals are so damaging to your dog and the environment sadly.

Try Billy No Mates (but do a loading dose first as you come off the chemical treatments)

BadEyeBri · 19/11/2020 19:24

Bravecto

Madbengalmum · 19/11/2020 19:25

No I don’t use, so many chemicals the dogs and environment don’t need. My last dog never had fleas in 14yrs and latest has not either.
I read about our rivers being further poisoned by spot on treatments for dogs, so no.

longtompot · 19/11/2020 19:45

I've seen a couple of articles recently, this week in fact, which say how bad for the environment the spot on treatments are, and as you've found out, some don't even work. The best one my dog had was a tablet, Bravecto I think? It did fleas and ticks. One tablet every 3 months. It is pricey, but it does work.

borageforager · 20/11/2020 07:54

Did you see this? I think you really should wash your hands after touching the dog with the flea collar on Shock

I don't like using the chemicals and never use them unless he actually gets fleas - this is the first time in years and years that we've needed them but he was driving himself crazy scratching. Will have a look at Billy No Mates before I use anything else chemical - thank you, @ZiggysPFrow
