I’m on the waiting list for a puppy from the best breeder I can find. The puppy will be trained as an assistance dog for my DD so we need to get this right.

The breeder doesn’t have litters very often, both parents are fully / extensively health tested, is local and offers a ton of support once puppy is home. She’s worth waiting for but omg I just want to get on with this and my friend’s cute puppy isn’t helping my impatience Grin

Bless you- it must be so hard waiting, especially when the world has gone puppy crazy!
But yes, an assistance dog for your DD will definitely be worth the wait. How exciting for you. My NDN is hoping to get an assistance dog for her DS so I appreciate how important it is to get the right dog.
Good luck with it all- the waiting and the dog.

The world really has gone puppy crazy, you’re so right.

I’ve been scrolling through a few of the selling sites, it’s really eye opening- especially for how few dogs are health tested

I’m so hopeful that this dog will give DD a bit of independence and reassurance... it’s a lot to ask, and if it doesn’t work then I’ll have a new running buddy and friend to keep me company in the day!

Oh how exciting.

What breed is it?

Is the bitch currently pregnant?

Will you be training the dog to help DD or is there a professional to do it?

Sorry to sound so nosy, but I do love a bit of puppy chat!! 🤣

BabbleBee · 16/11/2020 11:58

It’s a working cocker, mum to be is a gorgeous golden colour! She’s amazing at heel work, retrieval - all the things you’d expect from a trained gun dog.

She’s not currently pregnant, the breeder has quite strong feelings on puppies / Covid / Christmas so it’ll be next year before puppies are made. Which is the responsible thing to do, but the wait......!

The breeder will help with the training. She has one of her own dogs as an assistance dog for one of her DCs, which is incredible to see. She also has links with another trainer who has successfully trained epilepsy alert dogs so hopefully we can utilise her too.

There was a litter from another of her WCs earlier this year, they’re all coming along beautifully which has been a privilege to see. (Closed / private Facebook group for the ‘family’ of dogs / owners associated with the breeder).

Sounds like your puppy will be worth the wait

We did the same OP, wanted a dog for my DD who has downs and had specific criteria about the type of breeder we wanted. we were on the list and a litter was planned but the mating was unsuccessful. We waited a year from then before we brought our pup home! Worth the wait to be honest and the year flew by. Can’t wait to see pics as and when you get your pup.

@Retrievemysanity which breed did you choose?

@BabbleBee a golden retriever. Always wanted one and we have a cat as well as DD with SEN so thought it was one of the best breeds.

myfatiguehastiredness · 22/11/2020 09:15

We are waiting too. Just put my name on a wait list and turned down opportunity for a 9 month old resell as there were one or two alarm bells ringing. Our pup is due in mid December so hopefully end of Feb time. The wait gives us all time to puppy proof the house and clear some clutter which will be very chewable ( your shoes, husband, your shoes!)

Gorgeous dogs, too big for me though. My friend has a gorgeous girl who sat on her bay window sill as a puppy - she still does it and pretty much fills the window now Grin

I’ve seen so many resells on selling pages, I’m guessing puppies that were bought in the first lockdown and have already outgrown novelty / time demands / cute puppy company? I don’t think I could risk it, there could potentially be a lot of non-existent care and training to undo there!

@BabbleBee Ive just gone and bought a snuggly dog bed for a dog which doest exist yet! I think I've gone mental. Husband is writing lists of stuff and we are debating crates. What is this lunacy?

Retrievemysanity · 24/11/2020 18:16

@BabbleBee yes they are massive! Even all the books which talk about carrying your puppy everywhere to socialise them before they’re allowed out-are you kidding me she’s so heavy! Super cute though.

Gah.... I’ve seen affordable pups, sire is extensively health tested... I should wait, I should wait, I should wait....
