High quality puppy food - not grain-free

I'd like to change the food my 10 week old puppy is eating as he has the most noxious farts ever! He stinks away all evening next to us on the sofa! Grin

My issue is, all the 'premium' foods, or those I see recommendations for are grain free. I've read however that grain free diets are starting to be associated with heart issues, so I'd rather not eliminate grain at this stage. Talking to our vet today she said there is no reason to go on a grain-free diet unless the dog is intolerant, which there's no indication of.

I've been looking on allaboutdogfood.co.uk, but there's no way to filter for 'grained' foods, so I'm struggling to find an option I'm happy with!

Does anyone here have a dry puppy food they can recommend that's not in the grain-free category? Thank you Smile

We use skinners field and trial for our Lab pup. Just under £30 on fetch for 15kg it scores about 68% on all about dogfood.
He was very windy with lose poop before on harringtons.
He has nice firm poop and little wind now.

I have actually been looking into wetfood for the future as I am not sure about dry food and the high carb content. I am leaving him on skinners until he is a bit older though as it suits him well.

lyraa · 11/11/2020 22:37

Thanks @Foobydoo, I will definitely look in to Skinners. Funnily enough he's on Harringtons now, with all the wind!

In case you're interested, my vet did encourage me to keep up with the dry food (I use both wet and dry) as she said the dry really helps to keep their teeth cleaner.

The grain-free diet in relation to heart disease is a lack of taurine in the diet. You can purchase a supplement to add to food if you still wanted to feed grain-free. That also means you can choose the highest quality foods without weird additives and make sure your pup is still getting enough taurine.

Saying that, as long as there is a high meat content along with the grains you should be ok. It’s when people feed things like Pedigree and supermarket own brand that the problems start - because they are absolutely full of shite!

vanillandhoney · 12/11/2020 07:47

It could be the flavour of food you're feeding - have you tried switching flavours but sticking to the same brand?

Mine has a lamb intolerance that gives him an upset stomach - we feed Harrington's but by the chicken or salmon ones instead.

lyraa · 12/11/2020 09:11

@TeddyIsaHe - that's interesting re taurine, I didn't know that, thanks!

@vanillandhoney - that's a good suggestion re the flavour as well, he's on turkey and rice at the moment so I could just try a different flavour.

Thanks for all the suggestions, can you tell I'm new at this? Wink Grin

It's a learning curve for sure Grin

Mine gets mucus in his poo if he has anything with lamb - as soon as we switched to salmon the problem vanished almost overnight!

Obviously if that doesn't work you can just try a new brand - dog farts are the worst 🤮🤣

I honestly should be on commission for this dog food as I rave about it to anyone who will listen. Wolfworthy, my 10 yo chihuahua is on it, my 2yo chihuahua and my 12 week old chow chow. I found it through allaboutdogfood. It really has being amazing.

dementedpixie · 12/11/2020 09:32

That is grain free

currahee · 12/11/2020 10:12

"The grain-free diet in relation to heart disease is a lack of taurine in the diet... as long as there is a high meat content along with the grains you should be ok."

Neither of these things has yet been proven. While dogs are presenting with nutritional DCM and still having normal taurine levels, and the relationship between this and grain-free 'boutique' diets is still not fully understood, I'm not sure it's wise to make these kind of statements.

For what it's worth, after years of feeding raw and/or grain free diets and uhm-ing and ah-ing over what little research there is over the heart condition link I have started feeding Eukanuba and the sky has yet to fall in. ;)

Crappyfridays7 · 12/11/2020 10:15

We are on grain free but also small amount of meat and he still farts bad doesn’t always help. Arden grange is what we feed our 12 week old retriever on he was having some raw and has gone off it and happily chomping what we give him with normal poop 💩 joy

lyraa · 12/11/2020 16:54

@currahee - I have just ordered some Eukanuba medium breed puppy food. Not grain free, and a higher rating on allaboutdogfood than his current Harringtons, so decision finally made!

Thank you everyone for the suggestions, fingers crossed for less noxious gas when we've changed over!!

@Crappyfridays7 - "... and happily chomping what we give him with normal poop ..." I initially read that as though you were feeding your dog 'normal poop'!!!! Grin

@MadDoggoLady - that Wolfworthy one kept coming up in my searches! I will bear it in mind if the Eukanuba doesn't suit him Smile

I've tried various different foods for my dogs over the years and the only one I've found that's stopped the smelly bottoms and keeps their poo firm is tails.com.

Mine have dry food in the morning and a mix of wet and dry at night. Don't t know if they do food for puppies tho. We got an offer of 30 days for 1 dog for £1. Normal price not cheap but not overly expensive either.

Funf · 12/11/2020 18:39

We use Burns wet pouch Chicken, rice and veg mixed with the same brand Dry, , she loves it doesn't fart and poos are fine, the rest of her family are on it and some are show dogs, but all fit an health on it

Yep cos legume-based diets and taurine supplements are a 'healthy option'

The grain free obsession is weird. Why choose to feed a diet associated with ill health 🤷‍♀️

TeddyIsaHe · 12/11/2020 19:44

@Veterinari flipping heck, you pull me up every time 😂

I was just giving op options.

Apologies - it's not personal - I'm basically a username-blank, my memory is awful.
But I find the suggestion of supplementing a deficient diet that the OP has no interest in feeding a bit odd. Especially as we don't yet know the pathophysiology of DCM in grain free diets so don't actually know that this suggestion would work anyway.

I think it's important to correct misinformation - especially when it has welfare or health consequences

m0therofdragons · 14/11/2020 14:33

We’ve tried so many but firm poos seem to be limited to skinners or Lily’s kitchen. I couldn’t get skinners so we’ve gone with Lily’s. We use it with high quality meat from cannaghan which dpup loves. Tried forthglade as it was highly recommended and dpup looked totally unimpressed and refused to eat it, yet trainers and socks are apparently delicious. Just as well I love him!

Sheepareawesome · 14/11/2020 14:35

Burns dry food is really nice
We use forthglade wet as well but are considering changing it to butchers

AlwaysLatte · 14/11/2020 14:46

I didn't know about grain free food causing heart problems. Is it ok to switch back to grain if you haven't used it previously? My previous dog was grain free, recommended by the vet due to an itchy coat. I didn't want this one to get that so I just used the same thing with her.
