Smelly dog

I’ve got an English Bull Terrier. He’s wonderful but smells really ‘doggy’. His breath is fine it’s just his coat.
I wash his bedding twice a week and can still smell it after I’ve washed on a hot wash, bio liquid and laundry sanitiser.
I expect a certain amount of dog smell, but it’s so strong.
He’s 6, a rescue and I brush him every day. I get him bathed every 4-6 weeks and he’s back to his usual not-so-fragrant self within a week!
Help! What can I do?!

Have a look at his diet and exercise. Allergies/food intolerances can cause dogs to smell really bad, he could be eating something that’s disagreeing with him. Also I have this thing where I can tell just from their smell whether a dog gets exercised enough, dogs that are sat indoors too much develop this horrible kind of yeasty smell about them. I would also check the ears and mouth for any infections or dental problems that could be causing a smell, also anal glands

@Whysrumgone thanks for your reply.
He’s walked for at least an hour a day - usually more, and he’s on grain free tins + veg and the occasional bit of chopped fruit. Maybe I should try adding in some rice or something?
It really seems to be coming from his coat and he’s really shedding at the moment as well.
If it continues after I’ve looked at his diet I’ll take him to the vet.

Herbal pet supplies.co.uk
They will have something for you. It'll be a yeast infection most likely

The only bull terriers I’ve known at all well (owned by a baronet no less) were also very, very stinky.

I fear it may be a breed thing.

I had a bulldog and she was similarly stinky but not as bad. I brushed her very regularly and washed her bedding frequently. I very rarely washed her, I don’t think it is good for them.

  • like yours, it wasn’t breath, it was a skin/ coat thing.
Wolfiefan · 05/11/2020 16:36

Is it a skin fold thing? I would definitely look at diet. We feed raw but it’s not for everyone.

FredZeppelin · 05/11/2020 20:37

I was hoping it wasn’t a breed thing 😬
And I’ve also heard that males smell more than bitches which could be a factor.
I’ll look at his diet - I’d like to raw feed but just don’t have the space!
Thanks for the replies, we love him whatever he smells like, just wish he was slightly less pungent!

Herbal pet supplies are good. I’ve also had great help from Fenland Forager. Is it a yeasty type smell? Rather than doggy?
