Dog has gone off usual food...

Hi all,

Wonder if anyone could advise?

We have. 3 year old lab... usually very bouncy, happy, contented etc.

He's had the same brand of dry food since a puppy (although moved up the growth stages).

Around a week / 10 days ago he started to go off his dry food - we would put it out and he wouldn't touch it, or he would be in dribs & drabs rather than ravenous as usual. He became more whiny & unsettled but would love his walks, bound around the fields, still play games at home etc.

Because I thought he was going hungry, I gave him chicken & rice, which he welded down, and had a long sleep after. Now I'm doing this twice a day and his appetite has come back and he's settled again like 'normal'.

I've tried to reintroduce the dry food - it interested.

Has anyone else experienced their dog changing eating habits? And how do I manage it? The dry food was great because I knew how much to give him... I have no idea how to measure or manage anything else...

Perhaps he is bored with his usual? Mine's a fussy eater (has been from day 1) and if I offer the same 3 days in a row she will refuse..and is happy to go hungry for a day or so. ('they'll eat when they are hungry.. yeah but some dogs can hold out!) So I mix it up.. and never any problems with it. So I vary kibble, and usually give it a topper of grated cheese or a bit of ham/chicken. Other days I give mince with the kibble . Occasionally she has a bit of raw and now and then some tripe! (I originally wanted to raw feed her but she rejected so much it wasn't worth the cost)

I know lots ofpeople swear you should never change their food, but tbh dogs eat all sorts of dreadful stuff and my vet said most can eat a decent variety with no ill effects. However mine stops when she's had enough.. she never over eats so I don't worry about measuring quantity.

How about trying him on decent wet dog food..the amounts are on the tins just like dry. Or vary.. wet in the morning, kibble in the evenin..jazz it up a bit?!,

Thank you very much, @StillMedusa - I think you hit the nail on the head - he's bored with it.

Now it's happened, I can see why!!!! The same food day in, day out has got to be so dull.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to try mixing kibble with other foods as you have said.
