Why does DDog shun comfy spots?

Large breed, 10 years old. Got him from a rescue in June, where he'd been for 6 months after being given up by his previous owner.

My floors are all tiled, stone or wood, so he has a padded sheepskin blanket in the hallway, a proper orthopaedic bed with comfy walls to put his head on in the living room, and another bed in my office for when he's in there with me.

And yet - he's in the hallway right now NEXT to the comfy sheepskin, on the cold, hard stone tile.

When he comes into the office, he ignores the bed and lies on the hard wooden floor under my desk.

At night he spends a bit of time in his orthopaedic bed, but often gets up to lie in the hallway on the hard floor again (and it's chilly in my house at night –I got up in the night last night to go to the bathroom, found him out there, and the edges of his ears were cold).

What is going on?! I'm not worried, but I am confused... Grin

My lab is similiar

His expensive ortho bed? Doesn’t want to know. Is your dog cooling down?

Has he got any Collie or working breeds in him? My previous collie used to choose to lie across the back door, he made a fantastic draught excluder.
My current collie chooses the tiled kitchen floor or the wooden floor despite having multiple comfy beds whereas the springer cross prefers the sofa or a humans bed!
My theory is that they were bred to spend most of the time outdoors and are more comfortable when cooler. I think mine would be really happy if I got him an outdoor kennel.

BeesBehindMyKnees · 29/10/2020 09:08

Mine is the same. I am pretty certain he just likes being cooler and anything comfy is also too warm for him.

ladybee28 · 29/10/2020 09:37

@Recycledblonde I don't know what he is Grin but yes, probably some kind of working breed in him.

@GirlCrush he is quite possibly cooling down –I guess I forget that while I've got cosy slippers on to keep me warm, he's wearing a big hairy coat!

We don't have heating in my house – it's a traditional old Spanish place that relies on thick stone walls for temperature control, and it does get nippy inside at night.

When I woke him last night and felt his ears, they were cold, and when I asked him to get back in his bed he walked really stiffly, as though he'd seized up a bit. I guess that's where some of my concern comes from – he's an old fella and I just want him to be comfy Smile

Mine's the same.. ignores comfy dog bed in favour of draughty cold spots, and our house isn't very warm. I guess they know where they are comfy!

Our puppy will often choose to lie on the wood floor rather than in her bed. Or on the carpet with her head supported by the really uncomfy looking fire surround. She'll occassionally get up with a huge sigh from her comfy bed and go and lie somewhere on bare floor like it's ordained or something. I suspect she's just hot and wants to cool down.

BrownOwlknowsbest · 29/10/2020 14:27

Did you have a different dog before this one? I ask because my last rescue did this for the first few months. We had given her our previous dog's bed, machine washed, dried outside with sun and wind. Previous dog had died 6 months before she came. We thought perhaps she could still smell previous dog and expected him to come and claim the bed back. She did eventually accept her bed and used it every night.

Sitdowncupoftea · 29/10/2020 17:00

What breed is he? My dogs don't like dog beds and prefer the cold. Infact they are laid outside in the rain. They are malamutes.

I don't know what he is, I'm afraid – did the photo above post OK?

Guesses welcome!

I was just thinking about your previous thread yesterday and wondering how your boy was getting on! I have nothing useful to add as I don't own a dog but so pleased to see your old boy is doing so well!

doodleygirl · 29/10/2020 23:16

My girl often chooses to sleep on the floor rather than beds or couches. I think it is to cool down but I dont know.

Lovely to see another pic of the gorgeous old gentleman.

FLOrenze · 30/10/2020 14:04

I agree that they do it for coolness. My terrier gets herself into weird positions. She lays behind my chair in a narrow space, on a wooden floor with her back wedged against the cold hard radiator. She never goes into our only room with carpet. At night she starts off on my bed which has a fur cover, but endS up on the wooden floor.

She has lots of odd habits. During the day I am allowed to go to the toilet alone. If I get up in the night she has to squeeze in their with me.
