Puppy has started marking inside

Our 7 month old male puppy has recently started cocking his leg on walks and peeing more on his walk. We have now caught him marking in the house 3 times. How can we stop this? He is housetrained.

We had the same issue. Castration sorted it

We've been told by the breeder that we shouldn't castrate until 18 months

Neutering will only work in about 50% of cases and early castration causes more problems than it solves.

Treat it the same as housetraining - no fuss, clean it up with an enzymatic cleaner, and no unsupervised access to the house. If you see that leg go up then call his name and interrupt him with something else. Keep anything new to the house out of reach for a while (new smells are prime targets for a cover up) and if any rooms are particular targets then don't let him in them for a couple of weeks. Sometimes feeding and playing in the areas they want to mark will reduce the urge.

If you don't give him the opportunity to mark inside he'll soon forget about it Smile

We had this problem when our dog was younger.

We did as pp said, used an enzyme cleaner. Didn't tell him off but reinforced house training.

Didn't get him castrated. He has grown out of it now and hasn't marked in over a year now.

Mine stopped straight away after being neutered. I was surprised how quickly it took effect as I hadn’t expected it to.

That said, it’s worth trying to discourage him in other ways first as you can’t reverse neutering.
