Puppy crate - kitchen or bootroom?

We are collecting our 8 week old puppy on Saturday (yey!). Would you put the crate in the kitchen or the bootroom (just across the corridor from the kitchen) from the start? Downsides of the kitchen is that it is a bit cold at the moment as the ancient Aga is dead (hopefully to be resurrected) but there are no in use bedrooms above it so less sleep disturbance for the kids. Downsides of bootroom is it isnt where any one is all the time but it is warm (my dog loving plumber insisted on a big radiator being installed as well as dog shower and a heated towel rail to dry baskets when we renovated that bit of the house!) and has the back door so may be helpful with training? Kitchen is unrenovated and scruffy. In fact the whole house is scruffy but doesnt leak anymore at least.... So where would you start the puppy off?

I very much doubt the puppy will settle in a room all on its own to start with.

I would start with the crate in the room you are in most and move next to your for night time.

As the puppy gets more comfortable, and confident and a bit older you can then let them choose the place they prefer, probably the kitchen

We have a 16 week old puppy. We started him off with the crate in the study where there is also a single bed so I slept in there at first. Hes still in there because when we tried to move the crate elsewhere he got distressed.

Your boot room sounds amazing

I'd have a crate in the kitchen and puppy pen in the boot room-somewhere safe and snug for pup to sleep during the day and somewhere you can put him when you need him out from under your feet.

Put the crate beside a couch at night so you can sleep beside the pup for the first week or two and then move it into the kitchen by day. Once your dog is crate trained I'd still say the kitchen but with a light covering like a tablecloth over it for day naps and night time to keep him/her warm. Don't feel the crate has to stay in the same place.

Your room

I personally would have as pps have said next to you in your room to begin we.
We did this then slowly moved him out. I doubt a puppy will happily sleep alone to beginning with and will cry a lot.
I know some are in the camp of letting a puppy cry but not only is it horrible to hear but it also means you can't distinguish when pup needs out for the loo which might prolong toilet training.

In the kitchen from day 1 no issues, it see's it as its little den.
