Car and dog travel advice

Our rescue pup arrives in a couple of weeks, and I'm looking for advice/experience on making sure she can travel safely and comfortably in our car.

We have an old Peugeot 3008. Pup can't travel in the back seat because we have two pre-schoolers, and therefore two large car seats. So, she'll have to go in the boot. What do you recommend? Dog guard? Crate? Other?

TIA!

I like crates. Ours are crash tested. I think they tend to keep the mud and sand in one location Smile

Guards are fine if you dont mind the dog having the whole boot. Also need to teach them a good wait command so they do not jump out the minute the boot is open but that is pretty straightforward to do.

Crate
Ours sleeps in a crate in the kitchen and travels in the boot in a crate in my car or back seat in the crate if it wont fit in the boot.
As mentioned above keeps the wet and mud in one place.
Depending on the size of dog and boot uncrated they can get thrown about the boot.

We had crates when we had smaller dogs and a dog guard plus tailgate guard for our Lurchers, so they had the whole boot. Downside with the latter is that the rear of estate cars is often a crumple zone, so although the dog won’t become a flying hazard in an emergency, they aren’t as safe as in a crash tested crate.

Crates are much safer than just using guards - make sure you get one that's been properly crash-tested too. You can get crates that can be sectioned so you can create a small space for the puppy, then expand the space as they grow. In the meantime, the extra space can be used for storing things like leads, harnesses etc.

You can buy them from Pets At Home but I think they're only available online :)
